Teaching from Selayang

Selayang sits in the Gombak district of Selangor. Teachers living anywhere in the district, or elsewhere in Selangor, are welcome to apply.

Selayang is best known for the Pasar Borong Selayang, the wholesale market that is among the largest in the Klang Valley and comes alive in the small hours as lorries of vegetables, some carried down from as far as Cameron Highlands, are sorted and sent on to wet markets across the city. Alongside it stand the Selayang Hospital and the busy commercial core of Bandar Baru Selayang under the Majlis Perbandaran Selayang.

For all its energy, getting around Selayang at the wrong time of day is slow.

There is no centre to travel to and no fixed classroom in Selayang. Your commute is the walk to your laptop, which leaves more of your time for teaching itself.

The work

You teach one student at a time, so every lesson is built around what that student needs next. Expect mole calculations one week and Paper 3 practical answers the next.

School holidays and the months before SPM tend to be busier. If you can offer extra hours then, say so, and keep a lighter load the rest of the year.

A typical lesson mixes concept teaching with exam questions, taught in English over video. Because it is one to one, you can slow down or speed up for the student in front of you.

Evenings and weekends are when most students want lessons, which suits teachers with a day job. If you have daytime slots too, mention them.
