A large share of lost SPM Chemistry marks are not knowledge failures at all. The student knew the chemistry but answered a slightly different question from the one printed on the paper. They calculated the mass when the question asked for moles, missed the word “excess”, or answered about the anode when the question was about the cathode. Reading carefully is a skill you can train, and it protects marks across every paper. Here is a method.

Read the whole question before you write anything

The instinct under time pressure is to start writing at the first thing you recognise. Resist it. Read the entire question stem, and all its parts, before your pen moves. Later parts often reveal what the early parts are really driving at, and a value you need for part (a) is sometimes only given in the diagram or table beside part (c). Reading to the end first stops you solving the wrong problem quickly.

Underline the data, the conditions and the command word

Three things in every question deserve a mark of your pen:

  • The data, every number and its unit. Circle 25.0 cm3, 0.100 mol dm−3, 4.5 g. You will need them, and marking them stops you overlooking one.
  • The conditions, small words that change the whole answer: “excess”, “limiting”, “at room conditions”, “at STP”, “concentrated”, “dilute”, “anhydrous”. These are easy to skim past and expensive to miss.
  • The command word, “state”, “explain”, “describe”, “calculate”, “compare”. This decides the shape of your answer, and we cover it fully in our guide to command words.

Marking up the question takes ten seconds and turns a wall of text into a clear instruction.

The condition words that flip an answer

Some single words quietly rewrite what you must do. A few to watch:

  • “Excess” tells you which reactant is not the limiting one, so the other reactant decides how much product forms. If a metal is added in excess to an acid, the acid runs out first and fixes the yield.
  • “Room conditions” versus “STP” changes the molar volume you use, 24 dm3 mol−1 at room conditions but 22.4 dm3 mol−1 at standard temperature and pressure. Using the wrong one gives a wrong volume of gas even with perfect working.
  • “Strong” versus “concentrated” are not synonyms. A strong acid is fully ionised in water; a concentrated acid simply contains little water. A question can pair them in ways designed to catch a careless reader.

Watch for negatives and “which of the following”

In Paper 1 and in structured questions, a small word inverts the task. “Which of the following is not a property of ionic compounds?” asks for the odd one out, three of the four options will be true, and the true statements are the wrong answers. Underline “not”, “except” and “least” whenever they appear. A correct fact chosen for a “not” question scores zero, and it is one of the most common careless slips in the whole paper.

Read tables and graphs before you read the question about them

When a question hangs off a table, a graph or a diagram, study the display first. For a graph, read the axis labels and their units, note the scale, and see what the line is actually doing before you look at what is asked. For a table, check the column headings and units. Students routinely read a rate off a graph in the wrong units, or take a value from the wrong row, simply because they went to the question before understanding the data.

Answer the exact quantity asked

The final discipline is matching your answer to the exact thing requested. If the question asks for moles, do not stop at mass. If it asks for the volume of gas, do not leave your answer as a number of moles. If it asks you to name the product, give the chemical name, not just a formula, unless a formula is what was requested. A neat, correct calculation that answers the wrong quantity collects the method marks but loses the final mark, a frustrating way to drop a mark you had clearly earned. This matters right across Paper 2, where a single structured question can ask for three or four distinct things in sequence.

A thirty-second reading routine

Build this into every question and it becomes automatic:

  1. Read the whole question, all parts, before writing.
  2. Underline the data with units, the condition words, and the command word.
  3. Circle any “not”, “except” or “least”.
  4. Study any table or graph before the question attached to it.
  5. When you finish, re-read the question and check you answered the exact quantity, in the units, that it asked for.
