Command words tell you what kind of answer earns marks in SPM Chemistry. This guide explains what each common command word demands, so you give a fact when asked to state and a reason when asked to explain.

The single most common way to lose marks you actually deserve in SPM Chemistry (4541) is to answer the wrong kind of question. The command word, the verb that opens the question, tells you exactly what the marker is looking for. A question that says “explain” is not satisfied by a description; a question that says “state” does not want a paragraph. This page sets out the command words that appear across Papers 1, 2 and 3, and what each one demands, so your answers match the marking scheme.

Recall and identification

State / Give / Name / List. These ask for a short, direct fact with no explanation. “State the colour of the precipitate” wants one answer: the colour. Do not waste time explaining; a single correct word or phrase scores. “List” asks for several items, usually without needing detail.

Define. Give the precise meaning of a term, in the wording the syllabus expects. Definitions are marked strictly, so learn the exact form, for example, a definition of rate of reaction must mention the change in quantity of reactant or product per unit time.

Identify. Pick out and name the correct thing from what is given, an ion, a functional group, a piece of apparatus, a type of reaction.

Description and explanation

Describe. Say what happens, the observations, the steps, or the sequence, in a clear order, without needing the reason. “Describe what you would observe” wants the colour changes, gases and precipitates, in the order they occur. “Describe how to prepare…” wants the method as a sequence of steps.

Explain. Give the reason, why something happens. This is where most marks are won or lost. A full explanation usually states a cause and links it to the effect: not “the rate increases”, but “the rate increases because the particles collide more frequently”. If a question says “explain”, always include a “because” or a linking reason.

State and explain. A combined command: give the fact and the reason. Both parts are marked, so answer both.

Comparison and reasoning

Compare. Give points about both things, and make the comparison explicit, ideally paired, using words like “whereas” or “higher than”. “Compare the reactivity of sodium and magnesium” wants statements that set one against the other, not two separate descriptions.

Differentiate / Distinguish. State the differences between two things, or give a test that tells them apart.

Suggest. Apply your knowledge to an unfamiliar situation where there may be more than one acceptable answer. “Suggest” signals that you are expected to reason from principles rather than recall a fact you have memorised.

Predict / Deduce. Use a pattern, a trend or given data to work out a likely answer. “Predict the trend down the group” expects you to apply the periodic trend; “deduce” expects a conclusion drawn logically from the information provided.

Give a reason / Justify. State why. “Justify” often asks you to defend a choice or a conclusion with supporting chemistry.

Calculation and data

Calculate. Work to a numerical answer, showing your working. Write the formula, substitute values with units, and quote the answer to a sensible number of significant figures with the correct unit. Method marks are available even if the final number slips.

Determine. Similar to calculate, but may involve reading from a graph or table as well as computing.

Interpret. Read meaning from data, a graph, a table, a set of results, and state what it shows.

Tabulate / Plot / Sketch / Draw / Label. These are practical and diagram commands. “Tabulate” wants a proper table with headings and units. “Plot” wants accurate points and a best-fit line on labelled axes. “Sketch” wants the correct shape of a graph or structure, not a precise plot. “Draw” wants a careful diagram; “label” wants the essential parts named. A diagram scores only when the required labels are present.

A worked illustration

Consider one topic asked three ways. “State what happens when zinc is added to copper(II) sulfate solution” wants the observation: the blue solution fades and a brown solid forms. “Explain what happens” wants the reason: zinc is more reactive than copper, so it displaces copper from the solution. “Write the ionic equation” wants the balanced half-reaction or overall equation. Same chemistry, three different commands, and an answer that ignores the command word will drop marks even though the student clearly knows the reaction. Training yourself to read the command word first, before you plan the answer, is one of the highest-value exam habits you can build.
