Paper 2 (structured & essay)

Paper 2 is where SPM Chemistry (4541) tests depth. Where Paper 1 samples the whole syllabus in short objective questions, Paper 2 asks you to write, to explain, to justify, to calculate with working shown, and to build a full account of a topic. It is the paper that separates a student who knows chemistry from one who can communicate it under exam conditions. This page explains the official structure of the paper and how to approach each kind of question, using only the format published by the examinations board.

What Paper 2 tests

Paper 2 rewards the ability to set out chemistry clearly and completely. A correct final answer with no working can lose most of the marks; a well-organised explanation that shows every step earns them. The paper tests whether you can define terms precisely, describe and explain observations, draw and label diagrams, write and balance equations, carry out multi-step calculations, interpret data, and, in the essay sections, sustain a structured argument across several linked points.

Because answers are written, the marking scheme awards marks for specific points. Your job is to make each expected point clearly and separately, so the marker can tick it. Vague, run-on answers that bundle several ideas into one sentence often lose marks that the student actually knew.

The official structure

The paper is built from three sections:

• Paper 2 is worth 100 marks.
• Paper 2 has Section A (structured), Section B (limited-response) and Section C (open-response).
• Paper 2 lasts 2 hours 30 minutes.

We do not invent the mark split between the sections; the exact allocation for each section is set out in the official examination format, and you should confirm it there. What matters for your preparation is understanding what each section demands:

Section A, structured questions. These are guided questions broken into parts (a), (b), (c) and so on. Early parts are usually more approachable and later parts build on them, often ending with an application or a calculation. Section A is normally answered in full. Section B, limited-response questions. These are longer, essay-style questions that ask for extended writing, diagrams, equations and explanations, usually with a choice. Answers must be organised and complete rather than a single paragraph.

Section C, open-response questions. These are the most open-ended, often asking you to apply chemistry to a described situation, evaluate, or plan an experiment, again typically with a choice. They reward planning your answer before you write.

Sections B and C usually let you choose which question to answer. Always read the instruction printed on your own paper for the exact number to attempt and any rules, because those are set by the examinations board.

How to approach it

Budget your time by the marks. Since every mark takes roughly equal effort to earn, spend time in proportion to the marks a question carries. Do not write a page for a question worth a few marks while leaving a high-value essay half-finished.

Answer the command word. “State” wants a fact; “explain” wants a reason; “describe” wants a sequence of observations or steps; “compare” wants points about both things, ideally paired. Matching your answer to the command word is the single most reliable way to gain marks in this paper. See our command words guide.

Show all working in calculations. Write the formula, substitute the numbers with units, and reach the answer step by step. If you make an arithmetic slip but your method is clear, you can still earn method marks. Quote the final answer to a sensible number of significant figures and with the correct unit.

Label every diagram fully. A diagram earns its marks only when the essential labels are present, the apparatus, the chemicals, the electrodes and their polarity, the direction of a gas. An unlabelled sketch rarely scores.

A worked illustration of good structure

Suppose a Section A part asks you to explain why the melting point of a certain ionic compound is high. A full-mark answer is built from separate, markable points: the compound consists of ions held in a giant ionic lattice; there are strong electrostatic forces of attraction between the oppositely charged ions; a large amount of heat energy is needed to overcome these forces; therefore the melting point is high. Four clear points, each stated on its own, let the marker award each one. The student who writes only “because the bonds are strong” has one idea where the scheme wanted four.

For an essay in Section B or C, the same principle scales up. Plan the points first, a quick list in the margin, then write them in a logical order, one idea per sentence, supported by an equation or a labelled diagram where the question invites it. Planning stops you from repeating yourself and from forgetting a whole strand of the answer.

The paper is bilingual

Like every SPM paper, Paper 2 is printed in Bahasa Melayu and English on the same page, and you may answer in either language, or mix them. Read whichever version is clearer to you, and use precise chemical terms, the terminology is what the marker looks for, in either language.
