Section A of SPM Chemistry Paper 2 (4541/2) is made of structured questions, guided questions in parts. This guide explains how the parts escalate and how to answer each one the way the marking scheme rewards.
Section A of Paper 2 in SPM Chemistry (4541) is built from structured questions. A structured question is a guided question broken into parts, (a), (b), (c) and often sub-parts (i), (ii), that walk you through a topic step by step. It is the most predictable part of the written paper to prepare for, because the structure itself tells you what the examiner wants, one part at a time. What structured questions test
A structured question usually opens with something accessible, a definition, a value read from a diagram, a simple observation, and then climbs. Later parts ask you to explain, to write an equation, to interpret data, or to carry out a calculation, and they frequently depend on the earlier parts. The design is deliberate: the early marks reward secure basics, and the later marks reward whether you can apply them. Because the parts are separated for you, the marking scheme is also separated, each part, and often each sub-part, carries its own marks.
This is good news for preparation. You are rarely asked to produce a long unbroken answer; instead you answer a series of short, specific prompts. The skill is answering each prompt for exactly what it asks, no more, no less, and not letting an early stumble stop you attempting the rest.
Where Section A sits in the paper
The whole of Paper 2 is worth 100 marks and is divided into A (structured), B (limited-response), C (open-response). Section A is the structured section. We do not invent how many marks Section A carries or how many questions it contains, that is set out in the official format, and you should confirm it there. Section A is normally answered in full, with no choice, so plan to attempt every part. What we can prepare with certainty is the method for answering structured parts well.
How to approach each part
Read the whole question before you start. The parts are linked, so a later part often hints at what an earlier one is really asking. Reading ahead stops you writing a first answer that you have to undo.
Answer the command word in each part. “State” wants a fact; “explain” wants a reason; “calculate” wants working and a number with units. Because each part is marked on its own, matching the command word part by part is the most reliable way to collect the marks. See our command words guide.
Use the mark cue. The space provided and the marks available signal how much to write. A one-mark part wants one point; a part worth more wants several separate points. Do not write a paragraph for a single mark, and do not give one line where several distinct points are needed.
Attempt every part, even after a stumble. Because parts are marked separately, a wrong answer in (b) does not stop you earning full marks in (c). Never leave a part blank, write your best-reasoned attempt.
Carry answers forward carefully. When a later part uses a value you calculated earlier, use your value consistently. Many schemes allow follow-through marks, so a small earlier slip need not cost you the later marks if your method is right.
A worked illustration of structure
Consider a structured question on the mole concept. Part (a) might ask you to state the meaning of “one mole”, a single, exact definition scores. Part (b) might give a mass of a compound and ask you to calculate the number of moles: write the formula (moles = mass ÷ molar mass), substitute with units, and reach the value. Part (c) might give a balanced equation and ask for the mass of product formed, which uses your answer from (b) through the mole ratio. Part (d) might ask you to calculate the volume of gas produced at room conditions, applying the molar volume 24 dm3 mol−1. Notice how each part is its own markable task, and how the later parts reuse the earlier results. Answering in this disciplined, part-by-part way is exactly what the scheme rewards, and it is far more reliable than trying to see the whole answer at once.
The same pattern appears across topics: a structured question on electrolysis might move from naming the electrodes, to writing the half-equations, to explaining the observations, to calculating a quantity. Whatever the topic, treat each part as a small, complete answer to a specific command.
Common ways students lose marks
Answers that ignore the command word, describing when asked to explain, lose marks the student could have had. So do calculations with no working, unlabelled diagrams, final answers without units, and equations that are not balanced. Another quiet loss is leaving a later part blank because an earlier one went wrong; since parts are marked separately, that is marks given away for nothing.
