Most students check a wrong answer, think “oh, careless,” and move straight on. That is the single biggest wasted opportunity in revision. A mistake is the most useful piece of information you can get, it points at exactly what you do not yet know. Students who improve fastest in SPM Chemistry are not the ones who make no mistakes; they are the ones who mine every mistake for a lesson and never lose the same mark twice.
Why mistakes are worth more than correct answers
When you get a question right, you learn almost nothing new, you already knew it. When you get one wrong, you have found a real, specific gap: a keyword you did not know was required, a step you skipped, a formula you half-remembered. Correcting it now, in practice, is far cheaper than losing the mark in the real exam. The trick is to stop treating a wrong answer as a small failure to move past, and start treating it as a clue to chase down.
Keep an error log
The most powerful tool here is simple: a running error log. Every time you get a question wrong in practice, write in a dedicated notebook:
- the question (or a short version of it),
- what you wrote,
- the correct answer,
- and, most importantly, why you got it wrong, in one honest sentence.
That last line is where the learning lives. “I forgot the state symbols,” “I used the wrong molar mass,” “I didn’t know ‘oxidation is loss of electrons’,” “I misread ‘explain’ as ‘state’.” Over a few weeks, your log becomes a personalised map of your weaknesses, and revising it directly is far more efficient than re-reading whole chapters, because it targets only the marks you actually drop.
Sort your mistakes into types
Not all mistakes are the same, and the fix depends on the kind. As you review your log, tag each error into one of three buckets.
- Careless slips. Units missing, a sign wrong, a transcription error, forgetting to balance a final equation. These are not knowledge gaps, they are checking gaps, and the fix is a checking habit, not more revision. Our guide on the careless mistakes that cost marks goes deeper on these.
- Method or concept gaps. You genuinely did not know how to do it, a redox half-equation, an electrolysis prediction, a titration calculation. These need real re-learning from the syllabus, then fresh practice.
- Misreading the question. You answered a different question from the one asked, usually by missing a command word. “State” wants a fact, “explain” wants a reason, “describe” wants a sequence. Our page on command words shows exactly what each demands.
Knowing which type an error is tells you what to actually do about it. Careless slips need a checking routine; concept gaps need study; misreads need slower, more careful reading.
A worked example
Say a question asks for the number of moles in 8 g of sodium hydroxide, NaOH, and you wrote 0.35 mol. You check: the answer is 0.2 mol. Do not just cross it out. Work backwards. The relative formula mass of NaOH is 23 + 16 + 1 = 40, so moles = mass / molar mass = 8 / 40 = 0.2. Your error was almost certainly a wrong molar mass, perhaps you used 23 for sodium alone, or added wrongly. The log entry writes itself: “NaOH calculation, used wrong Mr; recompute Mr carefully every time.” Now redo it clean, and pull two more mole questions from the calculations hub to prove the fix holds.
Redo, do not just read
Reading the correct answer feels like learning but rarely is, it is the passive trap again. The real test of whether you have learned from a mistake is to redo the question from a blank page, a few days later, with nothing in front of you. If you can produce the full correct answer unaided, the lesson has stuck. If you stumble again, it has not, and the item goes back into your rotation. Redoing beats re-reading every time.
Use marked work and past papers as a mistake mine
Your richest source of mistakes is your own marked scripts, class tests, trial papers, past-year papers. Do not file them away in relief or disappointment; go through every dropped mark and ask what would have earned it. A trial paper you analyse properly is worth more than three you simply sit and forget.
