When we go through a student’s marked paper, the marks lost to genuinely hard chemistry are usually few. The bigger drain is a trickle of small, avoidable slips, a missing state symbol here, a dropped unit there. Added up across a whole paper, careless mistakes routinely cost a grade. The good news is that each one has a fix you can drill. Here are the ones we see most, with the correct version beside each.
1. Equations that are not balanced
An unbalanced equation loses the mark even if every formula in it is correct. After you write an equation, count each type of atom on both sides before moving on. The combustion of methane is CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O, four hydrogens and four oxygens on each side. A reaction of acid with a carbonate is 2HCl + CaCO3 → CaCl2 + H2O + CO2. 2. Forgetting state symbols
Ionic and thermochemical equations need state symbols, and examiners take the mark if they are missing. Neutralisation as an ionic equation is H+(aq) + OH−(aq) → H2O(l). Precipitation of silver chloride is Ag+(aq) + Cl−(aq) → AgCl(s). The (s), (l), (aq) and (g) are not decoration; they are part of the answer.
3. Getting the ionic equation wrong
A full equation and an ionic equation are different things, and questions ask for one specifically. In the ionic version you cancel the spectator ions. For zinc displacing copper, the full equation is Zn + CuSO4 → ZnSO4 + Cu, but the ionic equation is Zn(s) + Cu2+(aq) → Zn2+(aq) + Cu(s), the sulfate ion is a spectator and is left out. Read the command word and give the form asked for.
4. Units and significant figures dropped in calculations
A numerically correct answer with no unit, or with a wildly wrong number of significant figures, loses marks. Carry the unit through every line. If you calculate moles as mass / molar mass, then 8.0 g of sodium hydroxide (relative formula mass 40) is 8.0 / 40 = 0.2 mol, the answer is 0.2 mol, not just “0.2”. For gas volumes, remember that the molar volume at room conditions is 24 dm3 mol−1 dm3 mol−1 (Molar volume of a gas is 24 dm3 mol−1 at room conditions), so the unit must survive to the final line. 5. Misreading the command word
Many answers are correct chemistry but the wrong kind of answer. “State” wants a short fact with no reason. “Explain” wants the reason, the “because”. “Describe” wants an ordered account of what happens or what to do. “Compare” wants both similarities and differences, with a stated point of comparison. Losing marks here is pure carelessness, because the chemistry was in your head. Our guide to command words sets out what each one is really asking for.
6. Safety and observation answers with no reason
When a question asks why a safety step is taken, a rule alone often scores half. Write “rule + reason”: wear safety goggles to protect the eyes from splashes of corrosive chemicals. Observation questions are similar, say what you would see and, where asked, the inference. “A brown gas is released” is an observation; “the brown gas is nitrogen dioxide” is the inference.
7. Half-equations with charges that do not balance
In redox, a half-equation must balance for both atoms and charge. Oxidation of zinc is Zn → Zn2+ + 2e-; reduction of copper(II) ions is Cu2+ + 2e- → Cu. Count the electrons and check the total charge is equal on both sides. A half-equation missing its electrons is a common, costly slip.
8. Confusing similar terms
Small vocabulary errors cost marks: empirical versus molecular formula, element versus compound, strong versus concentrated acid, exothermic versus endothermic. A strong acid ionises fully in water; a concentrated acid simply has a lot of acid per unit volume, they are not the same idea. How to actually stop making them
Awareness alone does not fix careless mistakes; a routine does. Two habits help most. First, keep a personal “silly-mistake list” from every practice paper and read it just before your next attempt. Second, spend the last few minutes of every paper on a targeted check, scan only for balanced equations, state symbols and units, because those are where the easy marks leak out.
