Section C of SPM Chemistry Paper 2 (4541/2) is the open-response essay section. This guide explains how to apply chemistry to a new situation and plan an answer that earns every mark on offer.

Section C is the most open part of Paper 2 in SPM Chemistry (4541). Where Section A guides you and Section B asks for an organised account, Section C asks you to apply what you know, often to a described situation you have not met before, or by planning an experiment from scratch. These open-response questions reward the student who can think with chemistry, not only recite it. They usually come with a choice, so, as in Section B, choosing the question you can answer most fully is itself part of the skill. This page explains how to approach Section C, using only the official examination format.

What Section C tests

Section C questions tend to be application-led. A question may describe a real-world scenario and ask you to explain it with chemistry; it may ask you to compare and evaluate options and justify a choice; or it may ask you to plan an investigation to test a stated idea. The common thread is that the answer is not a memorised block of text, it is a reasoned response built for this question. The marking scheme still awards specific points, but those points reward correct application: the right principle, applied to the right feature of the situation, explained clearly.

Because these questions are open, they reward planning even more than Section B does. A minute spent deciding your line of argument, and listing the points and equations you will use, produces a far stronger answer than writing from the first sentence onward.

Where Section C sits in the paper

The whole of Paper 2 is worth 100 marks and is divided into A (structured), B (limited-response), C (open-response). Section C is the open-response section. We do not invent how many marks each Section C question carries or how many you must answer, that is set out in the official format, and you should read the instruction printed on your own paper. Sections B and C usually offer a choice, so weigh the options before you commit.

How to approach it

Read every option, then choose. Section C questions reward depth, so pick the one where you can apply the most chemistry confidently, where you understand the scenario, know the relevant principles, and can write the equations and, if needed, plan the experiment. A poor choice here is expensive.

Identify what kind of answer is wanted. Is the question asking you to explain a situation, to evaluate and justify a choice, or to plan an experiment? Each needs a different shape, and the command words tell you which. Our command words guide sets them out.

For a planning question, use a fixed framework. When asked to plan an investigation, answer in a reliable order: state the aim and hypothesis; identify the manipulated, responding and controlled variables; list the materials and apparatus; describe the procedure as clear numbered steps; say how you will record and present the data (a table, a graph); and state the expected result that would support the hypothesis. Working through that framework makes sure every markable element is present.

Apply principles to the specific situation. For an application or evaluation question, do not write everything you know about the topic. Select the principles that bear on this scenario and connect each one explicitly to a feature of the question. A relevant, applied point scores; a generic paragraph often does not.

Support with equations and diagrams, one idea per sentence. As in every written answer, keep points separate, balance your equations, and label any diagram fully.

A worked illustration of structure

Suppose a Section C question describes a factory choosing between two methods to reduce an acidic waste gas, and asks you to explain the chemistry and recommend one, with reasons. A strong answer plans first, then: identifies the relevant chemistry (the gas is acidic, so a base or an alkaline substance will neutralise it); writes a balanced neutralisation equation; explains how each proposed method works in terms of that chemistry; evaluates them against sensible criteria (effectiveness, cost, safety, by-products); and states a clear recommendation justified by the points made. Each of these is a markable point, and the recommendation earns credit only because it is supported. Notice that the answer is built for the scenario, that applied reasoning is exactly what Section C rewards.

For a planning question, say, to design an experiment to compare the rates of reaction of a metal with acids of different concentrations, the framework above gives the structure: aim and hypothesis, variables, apparatus, numbered procedure, a results table, a graph of rate against concentration, and the expected trend. Following the framework means you rarely leave out a mark.

Common ways students lose marks

The usual losses are: writing a general essay instead of answering the specific scenario; in a planning question, omitting the variables or the expected result; recommending without justifying; and, as always, unbalanced equations and unlabelled diagrams. A planned answer, matched to the command word, avoids most of these.
