How to structure your SPM Chemistry answers

Two students can know exactly the same chemistry and walk out with very different marks. The difference is almost never what they knew, it is how they laid it out on the page. An examiner marks against a scheme that lists specific creditable points, and a marker can only award a point they can actually find. Structuring your answer well is really just making every mark easy to see. This guide shows how to shape an answer so nothing you know is wasted.

Start from the mark allocation, not the space

The number in brackets, [1], [3], [5], is an instruction, not a suggestion. It tells you how many separate creditable points the marker is looking for. A three-mark part needs three distinct, different statements; a one-mark part needs one clean answer and then you stop. The blank space in the answer booklet is deliberately generous and is a poor guide to length. Read the marks first, and let them set how many points you plan to write.

Match the shape of the answer to the command word

Every question opens with a command word that fixes the shape the answer must take. Getting the shape wrong is the most common way a well-informed student loses marks:

  • State / Name / Give, a fact, a formula, or a single value. No explanation is needed, so do not waste time adding one.
  • Describe, an ordered account of what happens or what you do, step by step.
  • Explain, a reason. Almost every explain-mark hinges on the word “because”, linking an observation to a chemistry principle.
  • Compare, you must mention both things being compared, on the same named property.
  • Calculate, show the working, not only the answer (more on that below).

If you answer “explain” with a description, you have written true chemistry that earns nothing, because it is not the shape the scheme rewards.

One idea per line

The single biggest presentation upgrade is to write one point per line rather than burying several points in a dense paragraph. Compare these two four-mark answers to “explain why molten lead(II) bromide conducts electricity but solid lead(II) bromide does not”:

  • Weak: a long sentence that mentions ions and movement once, in passing.
  • Strong, laid out as separate lines:
    1. In the solid, the ions are held in a fixed lattice.
    2. The ions cannot move.
    3. When molten, the ions are free to move.
    4. Moving ions carry charge, so the liquid conducts.

Same chemistry, but the marker can tick four boxes instead of hunting through prose. Short, separate statements protect the marks you have earned.

Show the working in every calculation

For any “calculate” part, write the relationship you are using, substitute the numbers, then give the answer with its unit. Marks are usually split between the method and the final value, so a wrong final number can still score most of the marks if the working is visible. Take a simple mole question:

Calculate the number of moles in 8.0 g of sodium hydroxide, NaOH. (Relative atomic mass: Na = 23, O = 16, H = 1.)

Lay it out in full:

  1. Molar mass of NaOH = 23 + 16 + 1 = 40 g mol−1
  2. Number of moles = mass / molar mass = 8.0 / 40
  3. = 0.2 mol

Get the small things right: units, states, charges

A surprising number of marks turn on tiny details that are easy to structure into a habit:

  • Always attach a unit to a numerical answer, mol dm−3, cm3, g, kJ.
  • Include state symbols in equations when the question asks for them: (s), (l), (g), (aq).
  • Balance every equation and check the charges on ions before you move on.
  • Round only at the end, and keep sensible significant figures.

These are not stylistic preferences; they are named points in the scheme.

Structure differs by paper

Your layout should change with the paper. In Paper 1 (4541/1), an objective paper, there is no working to show, the whole skill is eliminating wrong options and managing time. Knowing which mode you are in stops you from over-writing a one-mark recall or under-writing a five-mark explanation.

A quick self-check before you move on

Train yourself to glance back at each answer and ask: does the number of points I wrote match the marks in brackets? Is every command word obeyed? Is there a unit on every number? This ten-second check, repeated across a whole paper, recovers more marks than almost any extra fact you could memorise.
