You must recognise common laboratory apparatus, state what each is used for, use the correct name, and choose apparatus that gives the accuracy a task needs, a pipette or burette for an accurate volume, a measuring cylinder only for an approximate one.

This page covers one Form 4 content standard: common laboratory apparatus and materials. The exam expects three things from you here, recognise each piece of apparatus, know exactly what it is used for, and choose the right one for a given task. It sounds simple, but marks are lost every year on careless naming and on picking apparatus that is not accurate enough for the job.

The apparatus you must know

Learn each name together with its main use and, where it matters, its accuracy:

  • Measuring cylinder, measures an approximate volume of liquid (for example 50 cm³). Quick, but not precise.
  • Pipette, delivers one fixed, accurate volume (for example exactly 25.0 cm³) in titration.
  • Burette, delivers a variable but accurate volume, read to 0.05 cm³, and is used to add acid or alkali during titration.
  • Beaker, holds, mixes and heats liquids; its markings are only rough.
  • Conical (Erlenmeyer) flask, holds the liquid being titrated; its shape lets you swirl without spilling.
  • Volumetric flask, makes up a solution to an exact volume (for example 250.0 cm³).
  • Thermometer, measures temperature in °C.
  • Bunsen burner, a source of heat.
  • Electronic balance, measures mass in grams (g), often to two decimal places.
  • Test tube and boiling tube, hold small amounts of substance for reactions.
  • Retort stand, clamp and boss, hold apparatus such as a burette in place.
  • Filter funnel and filter paper, separate an insoluble solid from a liquid.

The key idea: accuracy and choice

Beyond naming apparatus, the exam wants you to understand accuracy and to justify a choice. A burette and a pipette deliver precise, known volumes and are the correct choice whenever the answer depends on an exact volume, as in titration. A measuring cylinder is faster but far less precise, so it is used only where an approximate volume is acceptable, such as measuring water to rinse glassware. A balance measures mass to the precision shown by its decimal places. When you are asked “which apparatus and why”, the mark is for matching the apparatus to the accuracy the task actually needs.

Reading scales correctly. Read a volume with your eye level with the bottom of the meniscus to avoid a parallax error. On a burette the scale increases downwards and is read to the nearest 0.05 cm³.

Worked example

Question. A student needs exactly 25.0 cm³ of sodium hydroxide solution for a titration and, separately, about 100 cm³ of water to rinse a beaker. State which apparatus is best for each, and work out the volume delivered if a burette reading falls from 3.20 cm³ to 28.20 cm³.

Step 1, Match apparatus to the first task. The titration needs an accurate, fixed volume of 25.0 cm³. The correct apparatus is a pipette, because it delivers one precise volume; a measuring cylinder would not be accurate enough.

Step 2, Match apparatus to the second task. Rinsing water only needs an approximate 100 cm³. A measuring cylinder is the sensible choice, fast, and precision does not matter here.

Step 3, Calculate the burette delivery. Volume delivered = final reading − initial reading = 28.20 cm³ − 3.20 cm³ = 25.00 cm³. Always subtract the initial from the final reading, and keep both to two decimal places.

Answer. Pipette for the exact 25.0 cm³; measuring cylinder for the approximate 100 cm³ rinse; the burette delivers 25.00 cm³.

Practice question

Question. A student must prepare 250.0 cm³ of a standard solution and then measure out an accurate 25.0 cm³ portion of it for each titration. Name the apparatus used to make up the 250.0 cm³, name the apparatus used to measure the 25.0 cm³ portions, and state why a measuring cylinder should not be used for either step.

Answer. Use a volumetric flask to make up the solution to exactly 250.0 cm³, and a pipette to measure each accurate 25.0 cm³ portion. A measuring cylinder should not be used because it only gives an approximate volume; the titration result depends on an exact volume, so a less precise instrument would introduce a large error into the calculation.

Exam tip

If a question gives you an apparatus and asks for its use, answer with the specific purpose, not a vague one, write “a pipette delivers an accurate, fixed volume of solution”, not just “for measuring”. If it asks you to choose, always justify the choice by the accuracy needed: precise volume → pipette or burette; approximate volume → measuring cylinder; mass → electronic balance; temperature → thermometer. Naming the apparatus and giving the reason together is what turns a one-word answer into a full-mark answer. Also spell each name correctly, “burette”, “pipette”, “conical flask”, because a misread name can cost the mark.

Apparatus and materials, know the difference

The standard names both apparatus and materials. Apparatus are the tools and glassware you use again and again, beakers, burettes, thermometers, the balance. Materials are the substances and consumables you use up in an experiment, the chemicals, filter paper, litmus or universal indicator paper, and distilled water. A tidy answer keeps the two ideas separate: you set up the apparatus and you add the materials to it. Knowing which is which also helps you plan an experiment, because a method should list the apparatus first and then the materials, in the order the marking scheme expects.
