Laboratory safety is examined as sensible rules you can justify: read labels and hazard symbols, wear goggles, waft to smell, use a fume cupboard for toxic gases, and dispose of chemicals as instructed, and every rule must be given together with its reason.
This page covers one Form 4 content standard: handling chemicals and laboratory safety. Safety is not just common sense to be waved through, the exam tests it as a set of clear rules you can justify. The single most important habit for this standard is to write every safety answer as a rule paired with its reason, because a rule on its own rarely gets the full mark.
The rules you must know
Learn these handling and safety rules, and be ready to give the reason for each:
- Read the label and hazard symbols before use, so you know the hazards and the correct way to handle the chemical.
- Never taste any chemical, and smell only by wafting the vapour towards your nose with your hand, so you are not poisoned or overcome by concentrated fumes.
- Wear safety goggles (and an apron where needed), to protect the eyes from splashes of corrosive chemicals.
- Handle corrosive, toxic or flammable substances with care and use a fume cupboard for toxic or choking gases, so harmful gases are not inhaled.
- Add acid to water, not water to acid, when diluting a concentrated acid, because the dilution releases heat, and adding acid to water spreads that heat safely.
- Keep flammable liquids away from naked flames, and tie back long hair and loose clothing near a Bunsen burner, so they do not catch fire.
- Dispose of chemicals as instructed, not down the sink, to avoid harm to people and the environment.
- Wash your hands after the experiment and clean up any spills at once, to avoid accidental contact or contamination.
Hazard symbols
You should recognise the common hazard warning symbols and what each tells you: corrosive (attacks skin, eyes and metals), toxic (can cause death or serious harm if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed), flammable (catches fire easily), oxidising (provides oxygen and intensifies a fire), harmful/irritant (causes reddening or blistering), and explosive. Reading the symbol tells you what precautions to take before you even open the bottle, for example, a corrosive symbol means goggles and gloves, and a flammable symbol means keep away from flames.
The rule + reason habit. For every mark, write “rule so that reason”. “Wear goggles to protect the eyes from corrosive splashes.” “Use a fume cupboard so that toxic gas is not inhaled.” “Point the mouth of a heated test tube away from people so that hot liquid does not spray onto anyone.”
Worked example
Question. A student must dilute concentrated sulfuric acid and warm the diluted acid gently. The concentrated acid is corrosive and the dilution is strongly exothermic, releasing about 65 kJ of heat for each mole of acid. State two safety rules for this task, each with its reason, and explain the correct way to mix the acid and water.
Step 1, Identify the hazards. The acid is corrosive (skin and eye damage) and the dilution is exothermic (releases heat, so the mixture can heat up sharply and spit).
Step 2, Give a rule with a reason for the corrosive hazard. Wear safety goggles and gloves so that the eyes and skin are protected from corrosive splashes.
Step 3, Give a rule with a reason for the heat hazard. Add the acid slowly to the water while stirring, never water to the acid so that the heat released (around 65 kJ mol⁻¹) is spread through the larger volume of water and the mixture does not boil and spit acid.
Answer. Wear goggles and gloves (protect eyes/skin from corrosive acid); add acid to water slowly with stirring (spreads the exothermic heat safely and prevents spitting). Warm gently on a low flame or water bath, not fiercely.
Practice question
Question. A student heats a flammable liquid in an open beaker directly over a Bunsen burner flame, with long hair untied. Identify two things that are unsafe about this, and for each give the correct practice together with its reason.
Answer. (1) Heating a flammable liquid directly over a naked flame is unsafe because the vapour can catch fire; the correct practice is to heat it in a water bath so that there is no naked flame near the flammable vapour. (2) Long hair left untied near a flame is unsafe because it can catch fire; the correct practice is to tie hair back so that it cannot reach the flame. (Either point may also mention wearing goggles to protect the eyes.)
Exam tip
The examiner is looking for the reason, not just the rule. A one-word answer such as “goggles” or “fume cupboard” usually earns nothing; “wear goggles to protect the eyes from corrosive splashes” earns the mark. When a question says “explain” or asks “why”, the reason is the answer. Match the precaution to the specific hazard named in the question, corrosive → goggles and gloves; toxic gas → fume cupboard; flammable → keep from flames; hot liquid → point away from people. If you are asked for hazard symbols, describe both the symbol and what it warns against.
