How to use the symbols

Read the label first, identify the symbol, and let it choose your handling. If a bottle is marked corrosive, put on goggles and gloves and keep it off your skin; if it is marked toxic, work in a fume cupboard and never smell it directly, only waft; if it is marked flammable, keep it away from the Bunsen flame. When a question describes an accident, the answer usually names the precaution that was missed. Pairing each rule with its reason, “wear goggles to protect the eyes from splashes of a corrosive chemical”, is what turns a one-word answer into a full-mark one.

Beyond the symbols: general laboratory rules

The hazard symbols sit inside a wider set of rules the exam also expects. Wear safety goggles whenever you heat or mix chemicals, tie back long hair and secure loose clothing near a flame, and never eat or drink in the laboratory. Point the mouth of a heated test tube away from yourself and others, add acid to water rather than water to acid when diluting, and clear up and dispose of chemicals exactly as instructed. Each of these can be justified with a reason, and a question that describes a careless student is really asking you to name the rule that was broken and why it matters.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Giving a safety rule without a reason, which loses the second mark.
  • Confusing corrosive with irritant; corrosive burns, irritant only inflames.
  • Forgetting that oxidising substances make fires worse even though they do not burn themselves.
  • Smelling a chemical directly instead of wafting the vapour towards you.

What is the difference between corrosive and irritant?

A corrosive substance attacks and burns skin, eyes or metals, so it needs gloves and goggles. An irritant causes milder inflammation or discomfort on contact, such as a dilute acid or alkali, and needs care but is less severe.
