An effective collision is a collision that results in a reaction, because the particles have at least the activation energy and collide in the correct orientation.

An effective collision is a collision that actually results in a reaction, because the colliding particles have energy at least equal to the activation energy and meet in the correct orientation. Malay: perlanggaran berkesan · Chinese: 有效碰撞.

Every second, particles in a mixture collide countless times, but most collisions change nothing. A collision only becomes effective when two conditions are met together. First, the combined energy of the particles must reach or exceed the activation energy, so that the existing bonds can break. Second, the particles must be lined up in the correct orientation, so that the reactive parts meet. When both are satisfied, old bonds break, new bonds form, and product is made.

Example. Picture two molecules approaching. If they collide gently, they have too little energy and simply rebound. If they collide hard but sideways, in the wrong orientation, they still fail to react. Only a hard collision in the right orientation is effective. This is why raising the temperature increases the rate: the particles move faster, so a greater fraction of collisions carries enough energy to be effective, and effective collisions become more frequent.

Confusion to avoid. Do not treat every collision as an effective one. Increasing the collision frequency alone does not fully explain a faster rate; what matters is the frequency of effective collisions. Also remember that energy on its own is not enough without the correct orientation, and vice versa.

The effective collision ties together activation energy and orientation from the collision theory, and its frequency is exactly what every rate factor changes. A short answer that names both conditions, the energy and the orientation, is what earns full marks in SPM Chemistry, so learn the wording precisely.
