Most students revise Paper 2 by learning content and hoping the marks follow. The stronger approach is to learn how the paper is marked, then write every answer to collect those marks deliberately. Paper 2 is a written paper worth 100 marks, sat in 2 hours 30 minutes, and the way marks are awarded is remarkably consistent. Once you can see the mark scheme behind a question, structured questions stop feeling like guesswork.
How Paper 2 is structured
Paper 2 is divided into three parts. Paper 2 has Section A (structured), Section B (limited-response) and Section C (open-response). Section A rewards precise, compact answers to structured questions; Sections B and C reward longer, organised responses where planning and completeness matter. The core idea: one point, one mark
In structured questions, the mark scheme almost always awards one mark per valid, distinct point. A two-mark question wants two separate creditable statements, not one idea written twice at length. This single insight changes how you write.
Take a classic example: “Explain why magnesium chloride has a high melting point. [2 marks]” The mark scheme wants:
- Magnesium chloride is an ionic compound with strong electrostatic forces of attraction between the oppositely charged ions (1 mark).
- A large amount of heat energy is needed to overcome these strong forces (1 mark).
A student who writes only “because the bonds are strong” gives one vague idea and earns at most one mark. Two clear, separate points earn both. Before you write, ask: how many marks, and therefore how many distinct points do I need?
Obey the command word
Every structured question is controlled by its command word, and answering the wrong one wastes time and marks:
- State / name / give, a fact or answer, no explanation needed.
- Describe, say what happens or what is observed, in order.
- Explain, give the reason why, usually the point that carries the mark.
- Compare, give both a similarity and a difference, explicitly.
If a question says “explain” and you only “state”, you cannot score the reasoning marks, however correct your fact is. Underline the command word before answering.
Equations must be complete
Equation marks are among the easiest to secure and the easiest to drop. The scheme expects a balanced equation, and often state symbols:
Zn(s) + 2HCl(aq) → ZnCl₂(aq) + H₂(g)
When an ionic equation is asked for, give only the species that change, for example neutralisation as H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l). Keep the standard named reactions at your fingertips so the correct products and observations come automatically, this is where careless students lose marks that stronger ones bank.
Show working and carry units
In calculation questions, method marks are awarded for the working even if the final figure slips. Always set out the steps and keep units attached. For a titration where 25.0 cm³ of 0.10 mol dm⁻³ sodium hydroxide is neutralised by hydrochloric acid of the same concentration, the 1:1 ratio in NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H₂O gives 25.0 cm³ of acid. Writing the ratio and the substitution earns marks that a bare answer cannot.
Read data and diagrams precisely
Many Section A questions give a table, graph or apparatus diagram. Read values off the axes exactly, quote units, and describe trends in the language the scheme uses, “the rate decreases as the reaction proceeds because the concentration of reactant falls”. For diagrams, label with the correct apparatus names and note anything the question is testing, such as the position of a delivery tube or a heat source.
Planning the longer answers
In Sections B and C, a moment of planning pays off. Note the number of marks, jot the distinct points you will make, and write them as clear separate statements or a short paragraph per idea. Include the equation, the observation and the reason where each is relevant. Completeness scores here: a plan stops you writing three sentences on one point and forgetting three other marks entirely.
