Plenty of Malaysian students meet SPM Chemistry in one language and live in another. You might learn the subject in Bahasa Melayu at an SMK but think and chat in English at home; you might have come up through an SJKC and still reach for Mandarin first, yet sit in a Malay-medium science class; or you might read best in English but were taught by a teacher who explained everything in Malay. None of this makes you worse at chemistry. It simply means the words arrive in a different language from the one your brain reaches for, and in a subject where marks hang on precise wording, that gap is worth closing on purpose rather than hoping it sorts itself out.
The paper is already bilingual, use that
Here is something that surprises students every year. For many candidates the SPM Chemistry paper is offered in a bilingual (dwibahasa) form: each question is printed in Bahasa Melayu and, alongside or below it, in English, and you may answer in either language. Check with your school which version you are registered for, but if you have it, treat it as the advantage it is. It means you never have to guess what a question is asking, if one wording feels unclear, the other is sitting right there to disambiguate it. Pick one answering language, and stay in it
The most common language slip we see is the “rojak” answer: half a sentence in English, a technical term dropped in Malay, a unit labelled a third way. Examiners can usually follow it, but it costs clarity and sometimes a mark. So decide, before the exam, which language you will write your answers in, the one you write most fluently, not necessarily the one you were taught in, and commit to it for the whole paper. Consistency reads as competence, and it stops you wasting seconds mid-answer deciding which word to use.
Read in your strongest language, answer in your best
Reading and writing are different skills, and they do not have to happen in the same language. Read each question in whichever language you understand fastest; if the two printed versions differ in emphasis, glance at the other to confirm what is really being asked. Then answer in the language you write most precisely. A student who reads a rate of reaction question in Malay because that is how class was taught, but writes the explanation in clearer English, is quietly playing to two strengths at once.
Build a two-column vocabulary book
The heart of the between-two-languages problem is technical vocabulary. Everyday bilingualism does not prepare you for words like “keterlarutan”, “mendakan” or “pemangkin”. Keep a running two-column list, English on one side, Bahasa Melayu on the other, and add every term the moment you meet it. A starting handful, many of them from acids, bases and salts:
- salt / garam
- solution / larutan
- reaction / tindak balas
- catalyst / pemangkin
- solubility / keterlarutan
- precipitate / mendakan
- oxidation / pengoksidaan
- reduction / penurunan
- neutralisation / peneutralan

Mind the words that do not map cleanly
A few pairs cause real trouble. “Base” is “bes”, but “alkali” stays “alkali” in both languages and means specifically a soluble base, do not treat the two as interchangeable. “Pengoksidaan” (oxidation) and “penurunan” (reduction) look and sound nothing like their English partners, so they are easy to swap under pressure. And a formula or a unit is universal: H2SO4 is H2SO4, and mol dm−3 is mol dm−3, in every language. Never translate those, copy them exactly as they appear.
One definition, two languages
Suppose the question asks you to define neutralisation. In English: “Neutralisation is the reaction between an acid and a base to produce salt and water only.” In Bahasa Melayu: “Peneutralan ialah tindak balas antara asid dan bes untuk menghasilkan garam dan air sahaja.” Notice the structure is identical, the concept does not change, only the words wrapping it. If you understand the idea once, you can produce it in whichever language you have chosen. The equation that goes with it, HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O, needs no translation at all.
Your thinking language is allowed to differ
Many students revise and think in one language and answer in another, and that is completely fine. Make your notes in whatever language helps you understand, a mind map in Mandarin, a mnemonic in English, a diagram labelled in Malay. The only rule is that when it is time to produce marks, your final answer lands cleanly in your chosen exam language. Timed past papers are where you rehearse that final conversion until it is automatic and you are no longer translating in your head as the clock runs.

The honest summary
Living between two languages is not a weakness in SPM Chemistry, handled well, it is close to an edge. Use both versions of the bilingual paper; choose one language to answer in and stay there; build a two-column vocabulary book; and never translate a formula or a unit. Do that, and the fact that words reach you in more than one language stops being a tax on your marks and starts being something the single-language student never had.
