Two things sit on almost every SPM Chemistry student’s desk: a thick revision or reference book, and a stack of past-year papers. Students often ask which one they should be spending their time on. It is a fair question, because your revision hours are limited and the two resources do genuinely different jobs. The short answer is that you need both, but in the right order and the right proportion. Here is how to think about it.
What revision and reference books are good for
A good reference book is a learning tool. It is where you first meet or re-learn a concept: the structure of the atom, how ionic and covalent bonds form, the logic of the mole. It lays out the syllabus in order, gives you organised notes, defines the key terms precisely, and works through model examples so you can see a method done correctly before you try it yourself.
For SPM Chemistry specifically, a revision book is the natural place to fix a shaky definition or a calculation method. If you cannot yet write formulae from ion charges, or you are unsure how to convert grams to moles using molar mass, a worked chapter will teach you far more efficiently than staring at a past-paper question you have no way to answer. The book builds the understanding; that is its strength. A companion habit is to check unfamiliar terms in a Chemistry glossary as you read, so that words like electronegativity or neutralisation mean something precise rather than roughly.
What a book is not good at is preparing you for the exam itself. Reading a well-explained chapter feels productive, but recognising a method when someone else shows it to you is very different from producing it under time pressure on a question you have never seen. That is the trap of living only in books: passive familiarity that collapses in the exam hall.
What past papers are good for
Past papers are a testing and technique tool, and they do things no book can. They show you how the examiner actually phrases questions, which is often not how your notes phrase the same idea. They reveal which topics recur and how much each is worth. They force you to manage time, Paper 1 gives you 40 questions objective questions in 1 hour 15 minutes, and if you have never practised at that pace you will not discover the problem until it is too late. And crucially, past papers train you against the marking scheme: they teach you the exact wording, the working that must be shown, and the units that earn or lose the final mark.
Doing past papers is also the most honest form of self-testing. When you attempt a full past paper closed-book and then mark it against the scheme, your weak spots stop being a vague feeling and become a specific list, this type of titration calculation, that essay on rate of reaction, this qualitative-analysis observation. You can then go back to the book to repair exactly those, which is efficient in a way that re-reading everything never is.
Why it is not either/or
The mistake is treating them as rivals. They are sequential partners:
- Learn it from the book, understand the concept and see the method.
- Test it with past-paper questions on that topic, closed-book.
- Repair the gaps the questions exposed, back in the book or your notes.
- Re−test under timed, full-paper conditions closer to the exam.
Two common failures come from ignoring the sequence. Some students never leave the book, they read and highlight endlessly, feel prepared, and are ambushed by the real exam. Others dive straight into papers on a topic they have not yet learned, get almost everything wrong, and lose confidence for no good reason. Neither the book alone nor the papers alone is enough.
A sensible balance across the year
Early in the year, when you are still learning content, weight your time toward the book, perhaps 70% learning and building understanding, 30% short past-paper questions to apply each new topic. As the exam approaches and the syllabus is mostly covered, flip it: spend most of your time on full, timed past papers, using the book only to patch the specific holes each paper reveals. In the final stretch, past papers should dominate, because by then your problem is technique and stamina, not first-time learning. A useful rule of thumb: if you can explain a topic clearly but keep losing marks on it, you have a past-paper and technique problem. If you cannot explain it at all, you have a book and understanding problem. Diagnose which one you have, topic by topic, and spend your hours accordingly. Used together and in order, the reference book and the past papers cover the whole job, one builds the chemistry, the other turns it into marks.
