Definition questions look like the friendliest part of the paper, and that is exactly why so many marks slip away on them. Students “sort of” know what a mole or an isotope is, write a rough version in their own words, and miss the one keyword the scheme was waiting for. A chemistry definition is not a paraphrase, it is a precise statement built from load-bearing words, and the marker checks for those exact ideas. This guide shows how to lock down definition marks that too many students give away.
Why definitions are marked so strictly
A definition mark is usually awarded for specific ideas, not for the general gist. If the scheme wants “same number of protons but different number of neutrons”, then “atoms that are a bit different” earns nothing, even though the student clearly has the right idea in their head. The examiner cannot give credit for what you meant, only for what you wrote. Definitions reward precision, so the fix is to learn each one as a fixed form with its keywords intact, exactly as they appear in our glossary.
Spot the keywords that carry the mark
Most definitions turn on one or two words that must appear. Miss the keyword and the sentence collapses to nothing:
- Isotopes, atoms of the same element with the same proton number but different nucleon (mass) number. The marks live in “same protons, different neutrons”; do not just say “different atoms”.
- Relative atomic mass, the average mass of one atom of an element compared to one-twelfth of the mass of one carbon-12 atom. The comparison standard is the keyword; leaving it out loses the mark.
- Mole, the amount of substance that contains as many particles as there are atoms in 12 g of carbon-12, that number being the Avogadro constant, 6.02 x 1023 mol−1. The Mole Concept chapter sets this out in full.
- Exothermic reaction, a reaction that releases heat to the surroundings, so the temperature of the surroundings rises.
- Rate of reaction, the change in the amount of reactant or product per unit time. “How fast it goes” is not enough; the mark needs “per unit time”.
- Oxidation (electron transfer), the loss of electrons; reduction is the gain of electrons.
Notice how each definition has a non-negotiable core. When you revise, highlight that core so your eye learns to reach for it under pressure.
Give the required example
Some definitions are only complete with an example, and the example itself can be a separate mark. If asked to define an acid, the SPM answer is “a substance that ionises in water to produce hydrogen ions, H+”, and naming one, such as hydrochloric acid, HCl, shows you understand it. A definition of an alkali is “a base that dissolves in water to produce hydroxide ions, OH−”. Watch the acid-versus-alkali and base-versus-alkali distinctions; mixing them up is a classic dropped mark.
Beware the near-miss pairs
Many lost marks come from pairs of terms that sound similar but are defined differently. Keep these straight:
- Proton number vs nucleon number, protons only, versus protons plus neutrons.
- Atom vs ion, an ion is a charged particle formed when an atom gains or loses electrons.
- Element vs compound, a compound contains two or more elements chemically combined, not merely mixed.
- Strong vs concentrated acid, “strong” is about degree of ionisation; “concentrated” is about amount per volume. These are not the same thing, and the exam loves to test the difference.
When two terms live near each other in your notes, write the one word that separates them beside each. That single distinguishing word is usually the mark.
A three-part habit for writing definitions
Under exam pressure, build every definition the same way:
- Name the category, “a reaction that…”, “a substance that…”, “the amount of…”.
- State the defining condition, the keyword clause the scheme wants.
- Add the example or symbol if the term needs one, H+, OH−, or a named substance.
For “define a neutralisation reaction” that becomes: a reaction (category) between an acid and a base to form salt and water (condition), for example HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O (example). Three parts, full marks.
Learn definitions the active way
Do not just re-read definitions, that produces a comfortable feeling of knowing without the ability to reproduce them. Cover the term and write the definition from memory, then check it word for word against the glossary, circling any keyword you dropped.
