Every SPM Chemistry paper contains at least one question that feels unfamiliar, an unusual context, a substance you have not met by name, or data presented in a new way. These questions are designed to test whether you can apply chemistry, not just recall it, and they are where panic costs the most marks. The good news is that unfamiliar questions almost never need unfamiliar chemistry. What they need is a calm, repeatable method for finding the familiar chemistry hidden inside them. Here is that method.
First, don’t panic, the chemistry is one you know
Start from a simple truth: SPM can only test the KSSM syllabus. A question about a strange-sounding compound or an industrial process you have not seen is still, underneath, about bonding, moles, redox, acids, rates or energy, the same handful of big ideas you have studied all year. The context is new; the chemistry is not. Say that to yourself first, because a settled mind reads the question properly and a panicked one does not.
Decode the command word
Before you plan an answer, find the command word and let it tell you what kind of response earns the marks. “State” wants a short fact. “Explain” wants a reason, usually with “because”. “Describe” wants a sequence of observations or steps. “Compare” wants both sides and a linking word. Answering an “explain” question with a bare statement, or a “state” question with a paragraph, loses marks no matter how much chemistry you know. Mine the data you are given
Unfamiliar questions usually hand you more information than you first notice. Train yourself to extract it deliberately:
- Underline the numbers and their units. Units are a huge clue: g means mass, mol dm⁻³ means concentration, cm³ means volume. The units often tell you which formula to reach for.
- Read every axis, label and heading on a table or graph. A gradient is a rate; an intercept is a starting value; a plateau means a reaction has finished.
- Notice the substances and their state symbols. A gas produced, a precipitate formed, a colour change described, each points to a specific piece of chemistry.
The point is that the question is usually telling you how to answer it, if you slow down enough to read what it gives. Our data interpretation questions guide drills exactly this skill.
Map the problem onto chemistry you know
Now translate the unfamiliar context into a familiar type. Ask: what is this question really about?
- A new compound reacting with acid? It is an acid reaction, apply acid + metal, acid + carbonate, acid + base.
- Electrons being transferred, or oxidation numbers changing? It is redox.
- Masses or volumes with a balanced equation? It is a mole calculation, moles, ratio, answer.
- A rate rising or falling with temperature or concentration? It is collision theory.
Almost every unfamiliar question is one of your standard question types wearing an unusual costume. Naming the type tells you which method to run.
A worked way of thinking
Suppose a question describes an unnamed metal carbonate reacting with dilute acid and asks you to find the volume of gas produced. The context might be dressed up, but strip it back: metal carbonate + acid gives a salt, water and carbon dioxide. That is a reaction you know. From the mass given, work out the moles of carbonate; use the balanced equation’s ratio to find the moles of CO₂; convert moles of gas to a volume using the molar volume. The “unfamiliar” question is just the carbonate–acid reaction plus a standard mole calculation. Recognising that is the whole battle.
Manage the unfamiliar question in the exam
Tactically, protect your marks:
- Do the parts you can. Multi-mark questions are usually split into steps; answer every step you can, even if one defeats you. Marks are awarded part by part.
- Write your reasoning, not just an answer. In calculations, method marks are given for the correct steps even if the final number is wrong.
- Move on and come back. If a part will not yield, leave space, continue, and return with a fresher eye. A stuck question is not worth ten minutes of a Paper 2 you could spend banking marks elsewhere.
Build the instinct before the exam
