Chemistry underlies food, medicine, materials, agriculture and energy, and the syllabus asks you to give everyday examples and name careers that use chemistry, such as chemist, pharmacist, chemical engineer and laboratory technologist. A few clear examples you can explain score full marks.

This page covers one Form 4 content standard: chemistry in daily life and careers. Chemistry in daily life

Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes, so it sits behind almost everything around you. Prepare a few examples across different areas:

  • Food, cooking is a set of chemical changes; preservatives, food colouring and baking (where baking soda releases carbon dioxide to make dough rise) are all chemistry.
  • Medicine, medicines are chemical substances designed to act in the body; antacids, for example, neutralise excess stomach acid.
  • Materials, plastics, glass, ceramics, soap and detergents, paints and cosmetics are all products of chemistry.
  • Agriculture, fertilisers supply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to crops, and pesticides protect them; both are chemical products.
  • Energy, the combustion of fuels such as petrol and natural gas is a chemical reaction, and batteries store and release energy through chemical changes.
  • Health and hygiene, disinfectants, toothpaste and water treatment all rely on chemistry.

The point the exam wants is understanding, not length: choose examples you can explain in one sentence, such as “baking soda releases carbon dioxide, which makes the cake rise”.

Careers that use chemistry

The syllabus also asks you to name careers linked to chemistry and, ideally, say what each does:

  • Chemist, studies substances and develops new products in a laboratory.
  • Pharmacist, prepares and dispenses medicines and advises on their safe use.
  • Chemical engineer, designs and runs the industrial processes that make chemicals on a large scale.
  • Laboratory technologist / analyst, carries out tests and analyses samples, for example in a hospital or a quality-control lab.
  • Food scientist, improves the safety, flavour and shelf life of food products.
  • Environmental scientist, monitors and controls pollution of air, water and soil.
  • Medical or forensic scientist, uses chemical analysis in healthcare and criminal investigation.

Naming two or three careers and briefly saying what each involves is enough; the mark is for the link to chemistry, not for a long list.

Worked example

Question. A vegetable farmer wants to add 60 kg of nitrogen to a field each season using a fertiliser that is 20% nitrogen by mass. State which career designs such fertilisers, give one everyday example of chemistry in agriculture, and work out the mass of fertiliser needed.

Step 1, Name the career. Fertilisers are developed and manufactured through the work of a chemist and a chemical engineer, who design the process that makes them on an industrial scale.

Step 2, Give the daily-life example. In agriculture, chemistry appears as fertilisers that supply nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to crops so they grow well.

Step 3, Do the calculation. The fertiliser is 20% nitrogen, so each 100 kg of fertiliser contains 20 kg of nitrogen. To supply 60 kg of nitrogen: mass of fertiliser = 60 kg ÷ 0.20 = 300 kg.

Answer. Chemist / chemical engineer; example, fertilisers supplying nutrients to crops; 300 kg of fertiliser is needed to add 60 kg of nitrogen.

Question. Give two examples of how chemistry is used in daily life, one from medicine and one from food, and for each name a career that works in that area.

Answer. In medicine, an antacid is a chemical that neutralises excess stomach acid to relieve indigestion; a pharmacist prepares and dispenses such medicines. In food, baking soda releases carbon dioxide gas that makes a cake rise; a food scientist develops and tests such food products. (Other correct examples, such as preservatives, plastics or fertilisers with a matching career, are equally acceptable.)

Exam tip

Do not try to memorise a huge list. Prepare two or three examples you can explain in one sentence each, spread across different areas, food, medicine, materials, agriculture, energy, and for each keep a matching career ready. When a question asks for an example, always add the short reason why it is chemistry (“baking soda releases carbon dioxide, so the cake rises”), because the explaining is what earns the mark. If it asks for a career, name it and say briefly what that person does. A clear, explained example always beats a long list of names you cannot describe.

Why this standard matters

Although it looks like the easiest part of the chapter, this standard carries an important idea: chemistry is not an abstract school subject but the science behind the products, jobs and decisions of everyday Malaysian life. Understanding that helps you make sense of later chapters, the same nitrogen fertilisers appear again in industry, the same combustion reactions appear in energy and thermochemistry, and the same medicines connect to acids, bases and salts. Treat your examples as anchors: each one you can explain now becomes a memory hook for a harder topic later, which is why a small, well-understood set is worth far more than a long list you cannot describe.
