Rate of Reaction asks a student to explain, using collision theory, how concentration, temperature, surface area and a catalyst change how fast a reaction goes, and to read that story off a graph, including the gradient of a curve and the meaning of a plateau. Manufactured Substances in Industry then applies chemistry to the real world: alloys, the contact process for sulphuric acid, ammonia and the Haber process, glass, ceramics and composite materials.

They also rest on earlier work, Introduction to Chemistry, Matter and the Atomic Structure, The Mole Concept, Chemical Formulae and Equations with the Avogadro constant of 6.02 x 1023 mol−1 and the molar volume of 24 dm3 mol−1 at room conditions, The Periodic Table of Elements, Chemical Bonds, and Acids, Bases and Salts, so a shaky base shows up late in the year.
