Chemistry help in Terengganu’s energy town
Few towns in Malaysia are as closely tied to a single industry as Kerteh. This stretch of the Terengganu coast is the base of Petronas operations in the state, home to the Kertih refinery, a large gas-processing plant, and the petrochemical complex whose flare stacks and pipelines are the town’s most familiar skyline.
A dedicated airport and the Kerteh-Kuantan rail line were built to serve that industry. Around the plants sit planned residential neighbourhoods for the engineers, technicians and their families who keep the operations running.
It is, in a very real sense, a town built on Chemistry, and yet a Form 4 or Form 5 student here does not always have a specialist SPM Chemistry teacher nearby.
Swap the drive, and fit lessons around shift work
Online one-to-one lessons close both of those gaps. Instead of a long drive up the coast toward Kuala Terengganu or south to Kuantan for a class, the teacher joins the student at home, and the whole hour goes into Chemistry.
Kerteh is also a shift-work town: many parents work rotating schedules at the plants, and a fixed weekly online slot is far easier to protect than a class that depends on someone being free to drive. When the northeast monsoon brings heavy coastal rain, the online lesson simply continues while travel does not.
Who our Kerteh students are
Students in Kerteh sit SPM from national secondary schools (SMK) serving the town and its residential areas, with some in religious schools and the state’s residential schools (SBP) and MRSM colleges. Many grow up in technically minded households, and it is common to see real ambition toward science and engineering.
The paper itself does not bend to that: SPM Chemistry, subject code 4541, examined in English. Most students carry Malay as their first language, with English used widely in the industry around them.
We teach in English, the language of the exam, while keeping the Malay terms a student already knows within reach, so an idea such as a mole, an electrolyte or an exothermic reaction is understood from either side and written down correctly under time.
How the lessons work
Every session is anchored to the KSSM syllabus and DSKP content standards the school teaches, so our lessons reinforce classwork. We prepare all three papers: the objective questions of Paper 1, the structured and extended answers of Paper 2, and the practical assessment of Paper 3, where we coach planning a fair test, tabulating readings, plotting graphs and drawing conclusions the data supports.
Because Chemistry is cumulative, a one-to-one teacher can return to a shaky early topic, chemical formulae, the mole concept, salts, rates of reaction, and repair it while keeping pace with current work, then move toward timed practice and precise marking-scheme wording as SPM approaches.
