The smallest state capital, in the country’s rice country

Kangar is the state capital of Perlis and the smallest state capital in Malaysia, a quiet administrative town set on the Perlis River near the Thai border. The town centre gathers around landmarks like the Alwi Mosque and the state administrative buildings, and beyond it stretch the flat paddy fields that make Perlis, for its size, one of the country’s important rice districts.

Its people are largely civil servants and farmers, and its trades run to rice milling, sugar and other processing. It is a compact, orderly place, but in a state this small, the pool of specialist teachers for any one subject is naturally narrow.

Most students carry Malay as a first language, with Mandarin and dialect in the town’s Chinese community. Whatever the school, the paper is the same: SPM Chemistry, subject code 4541, examined in English.

We teach in English, the language of the exam, while keeping the Malay terms a student already knows within reach, so an idea such as a mole, an electrolyte or an exothermic reaction is understood from either side and written correctly under time.

How the lessons work

Every session is anchored to the KSSM syllabus and DSKP content standards the school teaches, so our lessons reinforce classwork rather than compete with it. We prepare all three papers: the objective questions of Paper 1, the structured and extended answers of Paper 2, and the practical assessment of Paper 3, where we coach planning a fair test, tabulating readings, plotting graphs and drawing conclusions the data supports.

Because Chemistry builds on itself, a one-to-one teacher can return to a weak early topic, chemical formulae, the mole concept, acids and bases, and repair it while keeping pace with current work, then move toward timed practice and precise marking-scheme wording as SPM nears.
