The Form 4 syllabus, and its foundations
Form 4 is the opening year of the SPM Chemistry course, subject code 4541, and it sets the base the whole subject rests on. Its eight chapters span Introduction to Chemistry, Matter and the Atomic Structure, The Mole Concept with Chemical Formulae and Equations, The Periodic Table of Elements, Chemical Bond, Acids, Bases and Salts, Rate of Reaction, and Manufactured Substances in Industry.
Acids, Bases and Salts is a chapter where many Johor Bahru students feel the load, because it pulls several earlier ideas together at once: the pH scale, neutralisation, working out which method prepares a given salt, and interpreting the qualitative tests that identify ions. None of it holds unless the mole work and formula writing from earlier in the year are secure, which is exactly why the foundation matters.
