A rest town at the top of Perak

Gerik sits far up in the north of Perak, where the highland forest closes in around the town. It is the capital of the Hulu Perak district and long known as a “rest town”, the last real stop on the East-West Highway before the road runs east across the mountains toward Kelantan.

A little way out, the Temenggor Lake Bridge carries that highway over the largest man-made lake in the state, and beyond it lies the Royal Belum State Park, one of the oldest stretches of rainforest in the world. This is a small, remote town wrapped in some of the most striking country in the peninsula, and that remoteness shapes everything about schooling here.

When distance is the real barrier

In a place like Gerik, distance is not a minor inconvenience, it is the whole problem. The specialist Chemistry tutors are clustered far to the south in Ipoh or Kuala Kangsar, hours away down the highway, and there is simply no way for a family here to make that trip weekly for a single subject.

Hulu Perak is a Malay-majority district with long-settled Orang Asli communities in the surrounding forest, so most students carry Malay as a first language.

Whatever the school, the paper is the same: SPM Chemistry, subject code 4541, examined in English. We teach in English, the language of the exam, while keeping the Malay terms a student already knows within reach, so an idea such as a mole, an electrolyte or an exothermic reaction is understood from either side and written correctly under time.

How the lessons work

Every session is anchored to the KSSM syllabus and DSKP content standards the school teaches, so our lessons reinforce classwork rather than compete with it. We prepare all three papers: the objective questions of Paper 1, the structured and extended answers of Paper 2, and the practical assessment of Paper 3, where we coach planning a fair test, tabulating readings, plotting graphs and drawing conclusions the data supports.

Because Chemistry builds on itself, a one-to-one teacher can return to a weak early topic, chemical formulae, the mole concept, acids and bases, and repair it while keeping pace with current work, then move toward timed practice and precise marking-scheme wording as SPM nears.
