The four state symbols are (s) solid, (l) liquid, (g) gas and (aq) aqueous. A correct equation uses the right formulae, is balanced so each element has equal atoms on both sides, and carries the correct state symbols.
A chemical equation only scores full marks when the formulae are correct, the atoms are balanced, and the state symbols are right. State symbols are the small letters in brackets after each formula, and leaving them out or getting them wrong is one of the most common ways to drop a mark in SPM Chemistry. This reference gives the four state symbols and a clear, ordered method for writing a balanced equation, arranged the way the DSKP expects.

Worked example
Write the balanced equation for the reaction of hydrochloric acid with sodium carbonate. First, the correct formulae: HCl, Na2CO3, NaCl, H2O and CO2. Balancing gives two hydrochloric acid molecules for one carbonate: 2HCl(aq) + Na2CO3(aq) gives 2NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g). Each element now balances, two sodium, two chlorine, one carbon, three oxygen and two hydrogen on both sides, and the state symbols show that the acid and salt are aqueous, the water is a liquid and the carbon dioxide is a gas. This is a complete, full-mark equation.
Ionic equations
For a reaction in solution, the ionic equation shows only the ions that change. In the precipitation of silver chloride, the full equation is AgNO3(aq) + NaCl(aq) gives AgCl(s) + NaNO3(aq), and the ionic equation is Ag+(aq) + Cl−(aq) gives AgCl(s). The sodium and nitrate ions are spectator ions and are left out. State symbols still matter: the precipitate is (s) and the ions are (aq).
Deciding the state of a substance
To choose the right state symbol, think about the substance at the conditions of the reaction. A metal, a metal oxide, a carbonate and most salts you weigh out are solids, so they take (s). A gas such as hydrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide or ammonia takes (g), and you can often confirm it because the question mentions a gas bubbling off. A substance dissolved in water, an acid, an alkali or a salt in solution, takes (aq), while a pure liquid such as water or molten bromine takes (l). When a solid is heated until it melts, it becomes a liquid and its symbol changes from (s) to (l), which matters in electrolysis of a molten compound. Reading the description carefully, and picturing what is really in the tube, is the surest way to pick the correct symbol every time.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving out state symbols, or writing (l) for a dissolved substance that should be (aq).
- Changing a formula to balance an equation instead of adding a number in front.
- Forgetting to re-check the balance after adding a number, so one element no longer balances.
- Writing water as H2O(aq); pure water is a liquid, H2O(l).
