Scientific method

The scientific method is the ordered way we investigate a problem in chemistry. The usual sequence is: make an observation, ask a question or state the problem, form a hypothesis (a testable prediction), plan and carry out an experiment in which the variables are controlled, collect and analyse the data, and finally write a conclusion that accepts or rejects the hypothesis. Following these steps in order is what makes a result reliable and repeatable, and the SPM Chemistry papers (4541) expect you to apply them to a described experiment rather than simply recite them.

Consider a class investigating how temperature affects how quickly marble chips react with acid. The observation is that the reaction fizzes; the question asks whether warmer acid reacts faster; the hypothesis states “the higher the temperature, the faster the reaction”; the experiment changes the temperature while keeping the acid concentration and marble mass fixed; the data are the times recorded; and the conclusion reports whether the hypothesis is accepted. Each stage has a name the examiner looks for.

A common confusion is treating the aim as if it were the scientific method itself. The aim is only one line, the purpose of the investigation, while the scientific method is the whole ordered process that surrounds it. Students also blur the hypothesis (a prediction made before the work) with the conclusion (a judgement made after it). Keep the order in your head and label each part precisely.

This term underpins the whole first chapter of Form 4 chemistry, because every apparatus you name and every safety rule you follow exists to make an experiment carried out by the scientific method fair and safe. Our teachers drill these steps until you can label any experiment on sight.
