The responding variable is the quantity you measure because it changes in response to the manipulated variable; it must be something measurable.

The responding variable is the quantity you measure in an experiment because it changes in response to the manipulated variable. It is the effect, not the cause. Crucially, it must be something that can be measured or counted, a time, a temperature, a volume, a mass or a length, so that you can record numbers and later look for a pattern. In every described experiment in the SPM Chemistry syllabus (4541) there is exactly one responding variable to identify.
Take an experiment in which you change the temperature of an acid (the manipulated variable) and measure how long a marble chip takes to disappear. The time taken is the responding variable: you do not choose it, you read it off, and it changes because you changed the temperature. Writing the responding variable with its unit, “time taken, in seconds”, shows the examiner you know it is a measured quantity.
The confusion to avoid is swapping the responding variable with the manipulated variable. Ask which quantity you set on purpose (manipulated) and which you measure as a result (responding). Another error is naming a responding variable that cannot actually be measured, such as “the reaction is faster”, instead give the measurable quantity, “the time for the reaction to finish.” Whenever a value comes from a thermometer, a stopwatch, a balance or a measuring cylinder rather than from your own choice, it is almost certainly the responding variable.
Together with the manipulated and controlled variables, the responding variable completes the trio at the heart of a fair test and lets you plot results and draw a conclusion. Our teachers show you how to state each variable with its correct unit so your answers score in full.
