Manipulated variable

The manipulated variable is the one quantity the experimenter deliberately changes from run to run. It is the suspected cause you are testing, so you set it to several known values on purpose, for example a series of acid concentrations, or a range of temperatures. In any described experiment there is exactly one manipulated variable, and identifying it correctly is usually the first mark in a scientific-skills question on the SPM Chemistry papers (4541).

Imagine testing how the surface area of marble chips affects reaction speed. You choose to use large lumps, then medium chips, then powder: the size (surface area) is the variable you are changing on purpose, so surface area is the manipulated variable. The times you then measure are not manipulated, you do not control them, you observe them. A quick check is to ask, “Which quantity did I decide the values of before starting?” That quantity is the manipulated variable.

The confusion to avoid is mixing up the manipulated variable with the responding variable. The manipulated variable is the cause you change; the responding variable is the effect you measure. A second slip is calling a variable “manipulated” when in fact you are keeping it constant, those are the controlled (fixed) variables, held steady so the test stays fair. If you can name the values you chose in advance, such as 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mol dm⁻³, you have almost certainly found the manipulated variable.

This term is one of the three kinds of variable at the core of the scientific method, and getting it right is what lets you write a valid hypothesis and a fair test. Our teachers use quick “spot the variable” drills so you never lose these easy marks.
