Chemistry in daily life means the many everyday uses of chemistry, in the food we eat, the medicines we take, the materials we use, the way crops are grown, and the fuels that give us energy. Recognising these uses is the final content standard of this chapter, and its purpose is to show why chemistry is worth studying: the subject is not only in the laboratory but in ordinary life. The SPM Chemistry syllabus (4541) expects you to give clear examples rather than a vague statement that “chemistry is everywhere”.
For example, food preservatives keep meals safe for longer, medicines are chemical substances that treat illness, plastics and alloys are engineered materials, fertilisers supply nutrients that increase crop yield, and fuels release energy through chemical reactions. Being able to name a use and the field it belongs to, food, medicine, materials, agriculture or energy, is what earns the mark. Grouping your examples by field like this also makes them easier to recall under exam conditions, and it shows the examiner that you understand how widely chemistry reaches.
The confusion to avoid is mixing up chemistry in daily life with chemistry-related careers. Daily-life uses are the applications themselves; careers such as pharmacist and chemical engineer are the jobs of people who work with chemistry. A second slip is giving an example that is not really chemistry, so choose uses that clearly depend on chemical substances or reactions.
