You do not need a laboratory to meet acids, bases and salts. They are in your kitchen, your bathroom cabinet and the soil outside your window. Students often treat the acids, bases and salts chapter as a wall of definitions, but the exam rewards those who can connect the theory to real things. This article walks through where the chapter lives in daily life, keeping the chemistry exactly the way SPM wants it.

What the words really mean

In SPM Chemistry an acid is a substance that produces hydrogen ions, H⁺, when dissolved in water. A base neutralises an acid; a base that dissolves in water is called an alkali, and it produces hydroxide ions, OH⁻. A salt is what forms when the hydrogen of an acid is replaced by a metal or an ammonium ion. Hold those three definitions in mind and the everyday examples below stop being random facts.

Acids you eat and drink

The sour taste of food is almost always an acid. Lemons, limes and oranges owe their sharpness to citric acid. Vinegar is a dilute solution of ethanoic acid (acetic acid), CH₃COOH, which is why it is a weak acid, it only partially ionises in water. Fizzy drinks contain carbonic acid, formed when carbon dioxide dissolves under pressure, and many colas add phosphoric acid as well. Vitamin C is ascorbic acid, and milk turns sour because bacteria produce lactic acid. Even your own stomach uses hydrochloric acid to help digest food.

Notice the pattern SPM cares about: these are mostly weak acids, safe in dilute form, while the acids that burn, concentrated sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, are strong acids that ionise completely. Strength (degree of ionisation) is not the same as concentration (how much is dissolved), and confusing the two costs marks every year.

Bases and alkalis around the house

Cleaning products are the classic home for bases. Ammonia solution cleans glass; oven and drain cleaners contain sodium hydroxide, a strong alkali that dissolves grease and is dangerously corrosive. Antacid tablets for indigestion contain mild bases such as magnesium hydroxide or calcium carbonate, which neutralise excess stomach acid without harming you. Toothpaste is slightly alkaline to counter the acids that bacteria make on your teeth. In the garden, farmers spread calcium hydroxide (slaked lime) or calcium oxide to raise the pH of acidic soil so crops grow better.

Salts everywhere

Salts are far more than the sodium chloride in your food. Sodium hydrogencarbonate (baking soda) makes cakes rise and calms acidic stings. Calcium carbonate is the salt in eggshells, marble, chalk and coral. Calcium sulfate is plaster of Paris, used for casts. Fertilisers are salts chosen to feed plants: ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate and ammonium phosphate supply the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium that crops need. Recognising these compounds as salts, and being able to name the parent acid and base, is exactly the skill Paper 2 tests. Keep the common acids, bases and salts table close while you revise.

Neutralisation you can watch

The single most useful reaction in the chapter is neutralisation:

acid + alkali → salt + water

Stripped to ions, it is simply H⁺ + OH⁻ → H₂O. This is not abstract. When you take an antacid, magnesium hydroxide reacts with the hydrochloric acid in your stomach:

Mg(OH)₂ + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + 2H₂O

A bee sting is slightly acidic, so the textbook remedy is a mild alkali such as baking soda; a wasp sting is alkaline, so a dab of vinegar helps. Farmers neutralise acidic soil with lime, and factories neutralise acidic waste before releasing it. You can see the same idea in the lab whenever you run an acid and alkali neutralisation or a titration.

The pH scale, made real

The pH scale from 0 to 14 measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is: below 7 is acidic, 7 is neutral, above 7 is alkaline. Gardeners test soil pH because most plants prefer a narrow range; aquarium owners watch the pH of their water; swimming pools are dosed to stay slightly alkaline. Natural indicators make the scale visible, red cabbage juice turns pink in acid and green in alkali, which is a lovely home experiment and a reminder that indicators simply change colour with pH.

Turning everyday chemistry into marks

The students who score well in this chapter are the ones who can move both ways: from a definition to an example, and from a household product back to the chemistry. When you next reach for vinegar, an antacid or a bag of fertiliser, name the acid, base or salt and the reaction involved. That habit turns revision into something you cannot forget.
