It is 9pm, you are tired, and you have a choice. You can watch another Chemistry explainer video, or you can sit down and grind through five titration questions. The video feels like studying and asks almost nothing of you; the questions feel like hard work. Almost every student picks the video, and this is exactly why so many revise for hours yet stall in the exam. Here is the honest comparison between watching and doing, and how to give each its proper place.
Why videos feel so productive
A well-made Chemistry video is genuinely useful for first exposure. When you have no idea what electrolysis is, watching a teacher build the picture, the electrodes, the ions moving, the half-equations forming, is a fast, clear way in. Videos are patient: you can pause, rewind, and rewatch the one part that confused you as many times as you like. For getting the initial idea into your head, and for revisiting a concept you have half-forgotten, they are excellent.
The problem is not videos themselves. It is what watching does to your sense of progress.
The illusion of understanding
Watching a teacher solve a mole problem cleanly, step by step, produces a warm feeling of “yes, I get it.” That feeling is real, and it is misleading. You are watching someone else do the hard part: deciding which formula applies, spotting that the acid is in excess, choosing the right ratio from the equation. Recognising a correct solution as it unfolds is a completely different skill from generating one yourself on a blank page under exam pressure.
Chemists call this the illusion of competence, and it is brutal in SPM Chemistry because the exam never asks you to watch a solution, it asks you to produce one. Students who revise mainly by watching walk into Paper 2, see a question that looks familiar, and freeze, because they have never actually done the thinking alone.
What doing problems forces on you
Working a problem yourself does something watching never can: it makes you retrieve. You have to pull the right method out of your own memory, apply it, and commit to an answer you can be marked wrong on. That act of struggling, and sometimes failing, is what physically builds the recall you need. Every question you get wrong and then correct teaches you far more than three flawless videos.
Consider a real SPM-style task: 25.0 cm³ of sodium hydroxide is exactly neutralised by 20.0 cm³ of 0.10 mol dm⁻³ hydrochloric acid; find the concentration of the alkali. The reaction is NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H₂O, a 1:1 ratio. Moles of HCl = 0.10 × 20.0 ÷ 1000 = 0.0020 mol, so moles of NaOH = 0.0020 mol, and its concentration = 0.0020 ÷ (25.0 ÷ 1000) = 0.080 mol dm⁻³. Reading those steps takes ten seconds and teaches you almost nothing. Doing three different versions yourself, changing the ratio, the volumes, the unknown, is what makes titration stick. Videos can’t see your mistakes
There is a second, quieter problem with a video-only diet: a video has no idea what you got wrong. It cannot see that you keep forgetting state symbols, or that you divide instead of multiply by the mole ratio, or that your “explain” answers only describe. It delivers the same content to everyone. Doing problems and checking them against past-paper answers at least surfaces your own errors, and having a teacher watch your working live is the only way to have the exact broken step corrected in the moment.
A sensible ratio
None of this means videos are bad. It means the balance most students strike is upside down. A healthier rhythm looks like:
- Watch to learn a new idea, once, actively, pausing to jot the key steps.
- Then close the video and do questions, ideally more time doing than watching, roughly two-to-one or more as the exam nears.
- Mark honestly and note every recurring mistake, because those are your real syllabus.
- Rewatch only the specific concept a wrong question exposed, not the whole topic again.
Think of a video as reading the recipe and doing problems as actually cooking. You cannot learn to cook by watching cooking shows, and you cannot learn Chemistry by watching solutions. The exam is a kitchen, not a cinema.
