A classroom moves at one pace, the pace the teacher must set for thirty different students. If electrolysis clicks for you instantly but the mole concept does not, the class still spends the same time on each. You either wait or fall behind. You can pause on a half-equation until it makes sense, or skip quickly past what you already own. For a subject where topics stack on top of each other, you cannot do titration calculations until moles are solid, being able to slow down at the exact sticking point is a real advantage.

The flip side: a fixed classroom pace also imposes discipline. Online learning asks you to set your own rhythm, and a student who keeps “pausing to come back later” can drift. Pace is only an advantage if you actually use the control it gives you.

Attention and the screen

A classroom gives you a room with no phone in your hand and a teacher who notices when your eyes glaze over. That external structure genuinely helps some students concentrate. Online, the same device that teaches you also holds every distraction you own, one tab away.

But the screen cuts both ways. In a live online lesson, a shared screen lets a teacher annotate a past paper in real time, build an energy level diagram line by line, or zoom in on the working of a calculation so nothing is lost across a crowded room. Many students see the steps of a redox equation more clearly on a screen a metre from their face than on a whiteboard they are squinting at from the back row. The trick is managing screen habits deliberately: one tab, phone in another room, camera on if you are in a live lesson.

Doing the chemistry, not just watching it

Here is where the format matters less than what you do inside it. Chemistry is not learned by receiving explanations, in a classroom or online, it is learned by working problems, balancing equations, and writing answers in the phrasing the SPM papers reward. A classroom often builds this in through class exercises and a teacher collecting your work. Learning online, you must build the same habit yourself: after every concept, do questions.

A worked example makes this concrete. Suppose you are asked for the volume of hydrogen produced when 0.24 g of magnesium reacts fully with excess acid, at room conditions. The steps are always: moles of Mg = 0.24 ÷ 24 = 0.01 mol; from Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂, one mole of Mg gives one mole of H₂, so 0.01 mol H₂; volume = 0.01 × 24 = 0.24 dm³, using the molar volume 24 dm3 mol−1. Reading that felt easy. Doing three variations of it yourself, without the answer, is the part that actually teaches you, and it is identical work whether you learned the method in a classroom or on a call.

Feedback: the deciding factor

The single biggest difference is feedback on your mistakes. A classroom teacher, split across a full room, can rarely mark your work in detail or watch you solve a problem live. A recorded video cannot see your work at all. Live one-to-one online teaching is unusual in that a teacher watches your actual working appear and corrects the exact step where you go wrong, the misread reactivity series, the state symbol you dropped, the “explain” answer that only described. That immediate, personal feedback is often what separates steady improvement from repeating the same errors.

  • A busy classroom gives structure, discipline and peers, strong for a self-directed student who focuses well in a group.
  • Recorded online resources give control and repetition, excellent for first exposure and revision, weak on feedback.
