This is one of the most common questions science-stream students ask, usually while deciding where to put their revision hours. The honest answer is that neither subject is harder in the abstract, they are hard in different ways, and which one you find harder depends on how your mind works. A student who thinks in patterns and equations often finds Physics comfortable and Chemistry fiddly; a student with a good memory and a feel for cause and effect often finds the opposite. Let us break down what actually makes each one difficult, so you can judge for your own strengths.
What makes SPM Chemistry hard
Chemistry sits on three different kinds of skill at once, and students usually struggle with whichever they are weakest at:
- Memory-heavy content. Chemistry asks you to hold a lot of specific facts, the tests for gases and ions, the colours of precipitates, the reactivity series, definitions phrased exactly. There is no formula to derive these from; you have to know them.
- A layer of abstraction. You cannot see atoms, electrons or ions. Chemistry constantly asks you to reason about particles you will never observe, which some students find harder than the visible quantities Physics deals in.
- Precise written answers. Much of Chemistry’s difficulty lives in phrasing. An “explain” question wants a specific chain of reasoning, and the mark scheme rewards the exact wording. Knowing the chemistry is not enough; you must write it the way the scheme expects.
Chemistry also has real calculation, but it is usually more procedural than Physics. Once you know that moles = mass ÷ molar mass, most mole questions follow the same steps. For example, 24 g of magnesium (molar mass 24) is simply 24 ÷ 24 = 1 mol. What makes SPM Physics hard
Physics is difficult in an almost opposite way:
- Mathematical intensity. Physics leans harder on algebra. You routinely rearrange formulae, substitute values, track units and manipulate several equations to reach an answer. Students weak in maths feel this immediately.
- Chained problem-solving. A Physics question often requires you to combine two or three concepts and work through several steps, where one early error carries through to the end. There is less that can be answered from memory alone.
- Concept depth over breadth. Physics has fewer standalone facts to memorise, but the concepts, forces, fields, waves, electricity, must be understood deeply enough to apply in unfamiliar situations. You cannot bluff a Physics problem the way you can sometimes scrape a recall mark in Chemistry.
The honest comparison
Put simply: Chemistry spreads difficulty across memory, abstraction and precise writing; Physics concentrates it in mathematical reasoning and multi-step problem-solving. If you have a strong memory and are willing to learn exact phrasing, Chemistry’s load is manageable and its calculations are gentle. If you are comfortable with algebra and enjoy working problems through, Physics rewards you and its lighter memorisation feels like a relief.
Neither is objectively harder. National results in both subjects show plenty of students scoring top grades, which tells you both are learnable, the difficulty is about fit, not an impossible ceiling.
How to judge which is harder for you
Rather than asking which subject is harder in general, ask these:
- Do you prefer remembering or deriving? If you would rather memorise clear facts than rearrange equations, Chemistry may suit you better. If you would rather work from a formula than memorise lists, Physics may.
- Where do your marks currently leak? Look at a recent paper in each. If Chemistry marks are lost on phrasing and Physics marks on calculation errors, that tells you where the real work is, regardless of which “feels” harder.
- Which do you avoid revising? The subject you keep putting off is often the one you find harder, and therefore the one that most needs deliberate, structured practice.
What to do with the answer
Once you know which subject is harder for you, do not simply pour all your time into it and neglect the other, that is how a strong subject quietly slips. Instead, give the harder subject more targeted time aimed at its specific difficulty. For Chemistry, that usually means drilling precise written answers and past papers until the phrasing is automatic. For Physics, it usually means working through calculation problems until the method is second nature.
