Most students throw their marked papers in a drawer and move on. That is a waste, because a wrong answer is the single most useful piece of revision information you will ever get. It tells you, with no guessing, exactly what you do not yet know. The trick is to stop treating mistakes as bad news and start treating them as a to-do list. This post shows you how to build that list from your own errors and work through it until the same mistake stops appearing.
Why your own mistakes beat any textbook
A textbook covers everything, including all the things you already know. Your mistakes cover only the things you do not, so revising from them is the most efficient studying you can do. Ten minutes spent fixing a specific error you actually made is worth an hour of re-reading a chapter you half-remember. The goal of this method is simple: never lose a mark twice for the same reason.
Step 1: Collect every mistake in one place
Keep a single “mistake book”, a cheap exercise book or one document, for all of Chemistry. Every time you get something wrong, in homework, a test, or a past paper, it goes in there. Do not scatter corrections across the margins of ten different papers where you will never see them again.
For each mistake, write three things:
- The question (or enough of it to remember what was asked).
- What you wrote, and why it was wrong.
- The correct answer, in full, in the exact wording the scheme rewards.
That third line matters most. Do not write “I need to remember the test for chlorine.” Write the actual answer: “Chlorine bleaches damp blue litmus paper.” A vague reminder does not revise; a precise correct answer does.
Step 2: Sort each mistake into a type
Not all mistakes are the same, and the fix depends on the type. As you log each one, tag it as one of three kinds.
- Knowledge gaps, you did not know the fact, definition, or reaction. Example: you did not know that the molar volume of a gas at room conditions is 24 dm3 mol−1. The fix is to learn it.
- Method errors, you knew the facts but applied them wrongly: you forgot to balance an equation before finding moles, or used mass instead of moles in a ratio. The fix is to drill the method until the steps are automatic.
- Careless slips, you actually knew it but lost the mark anyway: a dropped state symbol, a missing unit, a misread of “state” versus “explain”. The fix is a checking habit, not more studying.
Sorting matters because the three types need completely different responses. Trying to fix a careless slip by re-reading the chapter is a waste; trying to fix a knowledge gap by “being more careful” does nothing. Understanding how each mark is awarded, and lost, is easier once you have read how SPM Chemistry marking works.
Step 3: Turn each entry into a revision action
Now convert the list into things you will actually do. Beside each mistake, write the one action that fixes it.
- Knowledge gap on ionic equations → “Write out the five common ionic equations from memory each morning this week.”
- Method error on mole calculations → “Do five mole-to-mass questions using the full formula, moles = mass / molar mass.”
- Careless slip on units → “Underline the required unit in every calculation question before I answer.”
A mistake list without actions is just a diary of sadness. The actions are what move marks.
Step 4: Review, and prove the mistake is gone
A week later, cover your corrections and re-attempt the original questions from a blank page. If you get them right, tick them off, that knowledge has stuck. If you get them wrong again, they stay on the list and move to the top. This is the part most students skip, and it is the part that works: you are not done with a mistake until you can produce the right answer cold.

A worked example of one entry
Suppose you lost a mark on this: “Calculate the number of moles in 8 g of oxygen gas, O2.” You wrote 8 / 16 = 0.5 mol. Your mistake-book entry reads:
- What I wrote: 0.5 mol, using 16 as the molar mass.
- Why wrong: I used the mass of one oxygen atom. Oxygen gas is O2, so its molar mass is 32 g mol⁻¹.
- Correct answer: moles = 8 / 32 = 0.25 mol.
- Type: knowledge/method, forgot O2 is diatomic.
- Action: list the diatomic gases (H2, O2, N2, Cl2) and recalculate three mole questions.
That single entry, reviewed twice, closes a gap that might have cost you marks across several questions.
