In an SPM Chemistry calculation, the final number is rarely the only mark. Most calculation questions are marked step by step: a mark for the correct formula, a mark for the correct substitution, a mark for the answer, a mark for the unit. That means a student who shows clear working and makes one small slip can still score most of the marks, while a student who writes only a bare final answer that happens to be wrong scores nothing. Showing working is not neatness for its own sake; it is how you protect marks.

Why examiners reward the steps

Calculation questions are designed to test a method, not just arithmetic. The calculation questions on Paper 2 carry a mark scheme that lists each stage, and each stage earns independently. If your calculator slips at the last step but every stage before it is correct and visible, the examiner can award those earlier marks. If your working is invisible, they have nothing to reward but the final number, all or nothing. Visible working turns a risky all-or-nothing answer into a safe, mostly-recoverable one.

The layout that collects marks

Use the same three-line shape for every calculation: formula, substitution, answer with unit. Write the formula in symbols first, then substitute the numbers, then compute and state the answer with its unit. Keep each mole step on its own line so the examiner can follow, and so you can find your own slip if the answer looks wrong.

Worked example one: mass and volume of a gas

Calculate the mass of carbon dioxide, and its volume at room conditions, produced when 5.0 g of calcium carbonate decomposes completely. [Ar: C=12, O=16, Ca=40]

Step 1, write the balanced equation. CaCO3 → CaO + CO2

Step 2, moles of the given substance. Relative formula mass of CaCO3 = 40 + 12 + (3 x 16) = 100. Moles of CaCO3 = mass / molar mass = 5.0 / 100 = 0.05 mol.

Step 3, use the mole ratio. From the equation, CaCO3 : CO2 is 1 : 1, so moles of CO2 = 0.05 mol.

Step 4, convert to what is asked. Relative formula mass of CO2 = 12 + (2 x 16) = 44. Mass of CO2 = moles x molar mass = 0.05 x 44 = 2.2 g. Volume at room conditions = moles x molar volume = 0.05 x 24 dm3 mol−1 = 1.2 dm3.

Every line above is a place a mark can be awarded. Even if you fumbled the last multiplication, Steps 1 to 3 would still stand.

Worked example two: a titration

In a titration, 25.0 cm3 of sodium hydroxide is exactly neutralised by 24.0 cm3 of 0.10 mol dm−3 hydrochloric acid. Calculate the concentration of the sodium hydroxide in mol dm−3.

Step 1, equation. HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O Step 2, moles of the known. Moles of HCl = concentration x volume = 0.10 x (24.0 / 1000) = 0.0024 mol. Step 3, mole ratio. HCl : NaOH is 1 : 1, so moles of NaOH = 0.0024 mol. Step 4, concentration. Concentration = moles / volume = 0.0024 / (25.0 / 1000) = 0.096 mol dm−3.

Notice the volumes converted from cm3 to dm3 by dividing by 1000, a step examiners look for, and one worth writing out. Our titration calculation page walks through more of these.

Small habits that keep the marks

  • Carry units on every line, not just the final answer. A correct number with the wrong or missing unit often loses the last mark.
  • Do not round early. Keep full precision through the steps and round only the final answer, usually to three significant figures.
  • Convert units explicitly, cm3 to dm3, g to mol, and show the conversion rather than doing it in your head.
  • State the mole step even when it feels obvious. “Moles of X = …” is frequently a mark on its own; our moles from mass page shows why it is the hinge of most calculations.

When you are short of time

Even under time pressure, do not abandon working to save seconds. A three-line calculation takes almost as long to think as to write, and the writing is what banks the marks. If you truly cannot finish, write the formula and the substitution anyway, those stages score even without the final number.
