Ask most students how they revise definitions and they will say they “read through them.” That is exactly why definitions leak marks. A definition you can recognise is not the same as a definition you can reproduce, and SPM Chemistry only rewards the second kind. This post shows you how to revise definitions so the right words come out under pressure.
Why definitions are marked so strictly
Examiners mark a definition against a scheme, point by point. The scheme lists the specific keywords that must appear, and a mark is given only when your answer contains them. “Something like the right idea” scores zero if the key term is missing. That is why a vague, self-worded definition feels fine to you but earns nothing: the examiner is not judging whether you understand, only whether you said the words.
Take relative atomic mass. A safe answer is: the average mass of one atom of an element compared with one-twelfth the mass of one atom of carbon-12. Notice how many exact pieces that contains, “average mass”, “one atom”, “compared with”, “one-twelfth”, “carbon-12”. Drop “average” or “carbon-12” and you have lost a mark. You cannot improvise those words in the exam hall; you have to own them beforehand.
Understand first, memorise second
Rote memorising a definition you do not understand is fragile, it collapses the moment the question is worded differently. So begin with meaning. For rate of reaction, picture what is actually changing: the amount of a reactant used up, or product formed, over time. Once that picture is clear, the formal wording, the change in the quantity of reactant or product per unit time, is something you are describing rather than reciting. Meaning is the anchor; the exact words are what you tie to it.
The chapter hubs are built for exactly this. The Mole Concept chapter, for example, explains what a mole is before it asks you to state that it is the amount of substance containing 6.02 x 1023 mol−1 particles. Read for the idea, then lock the wording.
Use active recall, not re-reading
Re−reading is the weakest form of revision because it feels easy, your eyes glide over familiar words and your brain assumes it knows them. Active recall does the opposite: you retrieve the definition from memory with the book closed, then check.
A simple, proven method:
- Write the term on one side of a card and the exact definition on the other.
- Look at the term, say or write the full definition from memory.
- Turn the card over and mark yourself strictly against the keywords, all or nothing, like an examiner.
- Any card you miss goes back into the deck for tomorrow; cards you nail get spaced out to a few days later.

Watch the definitions students most often confuse
A handful of pairs cause most of the lost marks, so drill these deliberately:
- Oxidation and reduction, in terms of electrons, oxidation is loss of electrons and reduction is gain of electrons. The mnemonic OIL RIG (Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain) keeps them straight.
- Exothermic and endothermic, an exothermic reaction releases heat to the surroundings (temperature rises); an endothermic reaction absorbs heat from the surroundings (temperature falls).
- Isotopes, atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. All three phrases matter.
- Element, compound and mixture, students blur these; be able to state each precisely.
Write the ones you personally mix up on a single sheet and test yourself on that sheet alone.
Turn definitions into a habit, not a cramming task
Definitions reward little and often. Five minutes of recall every day beats an hour the night before the exam, because each day’s retrieval strengthens the memory a little more. Keep your card deck by your desk and clear it as a warm-up before you start heavier problem-solving. By the trial exams you should be able to state every core definition without hesitation.
