The most frequent marks-losing mistakes in Consumer and Industrial Chemistry, grouped by content standard: incomplete cleaning-action explanations, muddled oil-and-fat definitions, results without reasons, one-sided discussions, and loose use of key terms, each shown with what to write instead.
This page lists the mistakes we see most often in the Consumer and Industrial Chemistry chapter, grouped by content standard. For each one we show what students write, why it loses marks, and the correct version. Read it alongside the revision notes and the cleaning-action explanation, because a small change in wording is often the whole mark.
Cleaning action of soap (13.3)
Mistake 1, Naming only one end of the molecule. Students write “soap dissolves the grease” without describing both ends. This loses marks because the explanation depends on the molecule having two parts. Write instead: the hydrophobic tail dissolves in grease and the hydrophilic head dissolves in water; both must be named.
Mistake 2, Stopping before the emulsion forms. Answers often end at “the grease is lifted off”. That misses the later scoring points. The correct version continues: the grease breaks into small droplets, each surrounded by soap ions to form an emulsion suspended in the water, which is then rinsed away.
Mistake 3, Leaving out the like-charge repulsion. Many students never explain why the dirt does not settle back. The mark is earned by stating that the droplets carry the same negative charge, so they repel one another and do not redeposit on the cloth.
Mistake 4, Forgetting the surface tension step. Skipping straight to the grease misses an easy mark. Begin by saying soap lowers the surface tension of water so the water can wet the greasy cloth.
How to secure these marks. Learn the cleaning action as a five-step labelled sequence, two ends, lower surface tension, tails into grease, emulsion, like charges repel, rinse, and write every step. This single explanation carries the most marks in the chapter, so it is worth rehearsing until nothing is missing.
Oils, fats and their properties (13.1)
Mistake 5, Swapping the definitions of oil and fat. Writing that fats are unsaturated liquids or oils are saturated solids reverses the facts. The correct version: fats are saturated and usually solid (mainly animal), while oils are unsaturated and usually liquid (mainly plant).
Mistake 6, Saying unsaturation raises the melting point. This is backwards and loses the reasoning mark. Unsaturation lowers the melting point, because the C=C double bonds kink the chains so the molecules pack less closely and the forces between them are weaker.
Mistake 7, Vague test for unsaturation. Answering “it reacts with a chemical” scores nothing. Name the test: add bromine water; the unsaturated oil decolourises it in an addition reaction, while the saturated fat does not.
Soaps and detergents (13.2)
Mistake 8, Confusing what soap and detergent are made from. Students mix up the raw materials. The correct version: soap is made from an oil or fat plus a hot alkali by saponification, giving the sodium salt of a fatty acid; a detergent is made from petroleum and is the sodium salt of a sulphonic acid derivative. They are not the same substance.
Mistake 9, Giving the hard-water result without the reason. Writing only “soap does not work in hard water” loses the explanation mark. Add the reason: soap reacts with the calcium and magnesium ions in hard water to form an insoluble scum, whereas a detergent’s calcium and magnesium salts are soluble, so it still cleans.
Mistake 10, Forgetting glycerol or misusing salting out. In saponification, students often name soap but forget glycerol as the second product, or say salt is added “to make soap salty”. The correct version: sodium chloride is added to salt out the soap, lowering its solubility so it separates and floats to the surface.
Food additives (13.4)
Mistake 11, Calling every additive a preservative. Not every additive preserves food. Match the type to its function: a preservative slows microbe growth, an antioxidant slows oxidation (stops rancidity and browning), a flavour enhancer improves taste, and a colouring restores appearance. Naming the wrong type loses the mark.
Mistake 12, Giving a one-sided answer. When asked to discuss additives, students list only the dangers. That is not a balanced discussion. State a benefit (longer shelf life, safer or more attractive food) and a risk (excessive or unsuitable additives may harm health), which is why their use is regulated.
Medicines and cosmetics (13.5)
Mistake 13, Saying antibiotics cure everything. Antibiotics act on bacteria, not viruses, so they do not treat a cold or flu. Also state that not completing the course can lead to antibiotic resistance. Precision here is where the marks are.
Mistake 14, Ignoring the balanced view of cosmetics. Answering only that cosmetics “improve appearance” misses half the question. Name a benefit and a risk, some ingredients or unregulated products can cause side effects and harm health, so the answer is balanced.
Modern materials and nanotechnology (13.6)
Mistake 15, Listing a property with no link to the use. Writing “it is strong” without saying why that suits the job scores poorly. Always connect the property to the use, for example: fibreglass is strong yet light and does not rust, so it is suitable for boat hulls.
Mistake 16, A one-sided view of nanotechnology. Praising only the benefits ignores what the syllabus asks. Give a balanced comment: nanomaterials bring real advantages (efficient catalysts, stronger and lighter materials, targeted medicine), but the health and environmental effects of some are not yet fully understood, so they should be used carefully.

The pattern is the same across the chapter: name both parts of a mechanism, give the reason as well as the result, use the exact term, and keep every discussion two-sided.
