Tumpat lies at the mouth of the Kelantan River, about twenty kilometres from Kota Bharu, and it is a place with a distinctive character. It is the terminus of the KTM East Coast Line, the famous “jungle railway” that runs the length of the interior, so the town has long been a gateway in and out of the state.
It is also known across Malaysia for its Thai Buddhist temples: the district holds a large number of ornate wat, among them Wat Photivihan with its long reclining Buddha and Wat Machimmaram with its great seated Buddha, reflecting a Thai-Malaysian community that has lived here for generations. For a Form 4 or Form 5 student growing up in Tumpat, though, the immediate task is a modern one, turning study into marks on the SPM Chemistry paper.
That mix is part of what makes Tumpat’s classrooms interesting. Alongside the Malay majority, the district is home to long-settled Thai-Malaysian and Chinese communities, so its SPM students come from national secondary schools (SMK) and national-type Chinese schools (SMJK) alike, and they arrive at Chemistry from more than one language background.
The SPM Chemistry paper, subject code 4541, is examined in English, while science in many classrooms is taught in Malay, so a capable student can lose marks purely on the switch between languages. Working one to one, our teachers meet each student at their own starting point: lessons are in English to match the exam, but the Malay, and where useful the Chinese, terms a student already knows are kept within reach, so an idea such as a mole, an electrolyte or an exothermic reaction is understood clearly and written down correctly under time.

The district sits out on the coast near the Thai border, away from the tuition hubs of the city, so specialist SPM Chemistry help can be hard to arrange nearby, and a weeknight round trip to Kota Bharu is time an exam-year student can rarely spare.
