Limbang has a geography found almost nowhere else in Malaysia: the district sits between the two separate halves of Brunei, on the banks of the Limbang River that gave the town its old role as a river port. The oldest building in town, the belian-wood Old Fort raised by Charles Brooke in 1897 and now the Limbang Regional Museum, still stands over the water, and the surrounding country of sago, rubber and buffalo farms earned the place its affectionate nickname as a town of buffaloes.
It is a small, close community wedged against an international border, and that setting shapes everything about schooling here.
