Chemistry help on the island of the eagle

Langkawi is an archipelago of islands off the northwest coast, its name tied to the eagle, the great bronze bird of Dataran Lang, or Eagle Square, that greets visitors arriving by ferry at Kuah. The island is a UNESCO Global Geopark: the Kilim Karst Geoforest Park, with limestone that dates back hundreds of millions of years, and the cable car that climbs Mount Machinchang to a sky bridge above the forest, are the landmarks the world knows Langkawi by.

Behind the tourism, though, is an ordinary community of families, villages and schools whose Form 4 and Form 5 students sit the same national SPM as everyone else in the country, and reaching a subject-specialist Chemistry teacher from an island is not always easy.

For most towns “location is no barrier” is a nice phrase. For Langkawi it is literal.

Who our Langkawi students are

Students on the island mostly sit SPM from national secondary schools (SMK) in Kuah and the villages across Langkawi, and many come from families working in the island’s tourism, ferry and duty-free trades. Malay is the common home language, and the SPM Chemistry paper, subject code 4541, is examined in English.

That gap between the language of the classroom and the language of the paper is where marks quietly slip away, so we teach in English, the language of the exam, while keeping the Malay terms a student already knows within reach, so an idea such as a mole, an electrolyte or an exothermic reaction is understood from either side and written down correctly under time.

How the lessons work

Every session is anchored to the KSSM syllabus and DSKP content standards the school teaches, so our lessons reinforce classwork. We prepare all three papers: the objective questions of Paper 1, the structured and extended answers of Paper 2, and the practical assessment of Paper 3, where we coach planning a fair test, tabulating readings, plotting graphs and drawing conclusions the data supports.

Because Chemistry builds on itself, a one-to-one teacher can return to a weak early topic, chemical formulae, the mole concept, electrochemistry, and repair it while keeping pace with current work, then move toward timed practice and precise marking-scheme wording as SPM nears.
