Kudat is where Borneo ends. A short way north of the town, Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, the Tip of Borneo, marks the northernmost point of the island, a rocky headland where the South China Sea meets the Sulu Sea.
This is the heartland of the Rungus people, known for their longhouses at Bavanggazo, their beadwork and their gong-making at villages such as Sumangkap. It is a remote and distinctive corner of the state.
For the Form 4 and Form 5 students growing up here, though, the pressing question is the everyday one: how to turn effort in Chemistry into marks on the SPM paper.
