Sekolah Menengah Sains Alam Shah is a fully residential school in Kuala Lumpur, and its students board through the school week before heading home on leave weekends and holidays. Living on campus keeps study structured, but it also means a student cannot easily reach a specialist teacher mid-week when a Chemistry topic starts to unravel. Where students most often lose marks in Chemistry

Chemistry marks are usually lost in a few predictable places, and a one-to-one lesson is the fastest way to find and fix them for a particular student. The mole concept and stoichiometry trip up answers when the reasoning behind the numbers is not secure. Electrochemistry and the reactivity series reward students who can explain why a reaction happens, not just what happens. Organic chemistry demands careful naming and clear structures. Acids, bases and salts hinge on precise definitions and balanced equations. Rather than reteaching everything, our teachers diagnose which of these are actually costing a student and work there first.

Coaching Paper 3 without a lab at home

Paper 3 is a practical assessment, and boarders often have limited time to rehearse its skills outside the school laboratory. Fortunately, most of what Paper 3 tests can be practised on paper and screen: identifying the manipulated, responding and controlled variables; recording readings in a clean, correctly labelled table; plotting points accurately and drawing a best-fit line; reading values off a graph; and writing a conclusion that matches the trend in the data. Our teachers coach each of these directly, so a student meets the practical paper knowing exactly what the marking scheme is looking for.

Fitting lessons to the boarding week

Because lessons are online, there is nothing to travel to and no time lost on the road, a whole hour goes into Chemistry. We schedule sessions for the times a student is genuinely free, whether that is a leave weekend, a free evening at home, or a term break, and we keep a consistent thread through the year so progress builds rather than resets. Teaching is in English to match the SPM Chemistry paper, with support for the Malay terms a student already uses, and everything stays aligned to the KSSM curriculum and DSKP standards the school follows.
