Inference

An inference is a reasonable conclusion or interpretation drawn from an observation. Where an observation states only what is detected, an inference explains what it means or why it happens, using your chemistry knowledge. If the observation is “a gas turns limewater milky”, the inference is “the gas is carbon dioxide”. An inference always goes one step beyond the observation, and the SPM Chemistry papers (4541) frequently ask you to give the observation and its matching inference in the same question.

For example, when a metal is added to dilute acid you might observe “bubbles of gas are produced and the metal dissolves”. A sound inference is “the metal reacts with the acid to form hydrogen gas”. The inference is not simply invented; it is justified by the observation and by what you know about how metals react with acids. A weak inference that the observation does not support would lose the mark. The same observation can sometimes allow more than one inference, which is exactly why chemists design further tests, such as collecting the gas and testing it with a lighted splint, to decide which interpretation is correct.

The confusion to avoid is the classic pair: observation versus inference. Muddling them is the most common way marks are lost in this chapter. Remember the order, you observe first, then infer. A quick test is to ask, “Could I detect this directly with my senses or an instrument?” If yes, it is an observation; if it requires reasoning or naming a substance, it is an inference.
