In many rate experiments a gas is given off. As the gas is produced, it pushes the plunger of the gas syringe outward, and the volume can be read directly from the scale on the barrel. By recording the volume at regular time intervals, you can plot a graph of gas volume against time and find the rate from its gradient. The gas syringe is chosen when the gas is not very soluble in water and when a fairly accurate volume reading is needed.
Example. When marble chips react with dilute hydrochloric acid, carbon dioxide is collected in a gas syringe. Readings of the volume are taken every ten seconds, and the results are plotted to give a curve that is steep at first and then levels off at a plateau. The gradient of the curve at any point gives the rate at that moment.
Confusion to avoid. Do not confuse the gas-syringe method with following a reaction by loss of mass. A gas syringe measures the volume of gas made; a balance measures the mass lost as gas escapes. Both can follow the same reaction, but they record different quantities. The gas syringe is also unsuitable for a gas that dissolves readily in water, because some gas would be lost before it is measured.
