Orientation

Orientation is the direction in which particles approach each other when they collide. Only the correct orientation, together with enough energy, gives an effective collision. Malay: orientasi · Chinese: 取向.

Collision theory sets two conditions for a collision to lead to a reaction: the particles must have at least the activation energy, and they must collide in the correct orientation. Orientation is about how the particles are lined up at the moment of impact. The reactive parts of the particles have to meet in the right way for bonds to break and reform. If two particles collide with plenty of energy but the wrong way round, they simply bounce apart without reacting.

Example. Imagine two molecules that must join at a particular atom. If they approach so that those atoms meet head-on, and the collision is energetic enough, a reaction can happen. If instead they meet side-on, with the reactive atoms pointing away from each other, no reaction occurs however hard they hit. This is why not every energetic collision is effective.

Confusion to avoid. Do not think energy alone decides whether a collision reacts. Energy and orientation are both required: a collision that is energetic but badly oriented fails, and so does one that is well oriented but too gentle. Both conditions must be met at the same time for the collision to be effective. This is also why, at a fixed temperature, only a fraction of the many collisions each second actually leads to a reaction.

Orientation is the second half of the effective-collision idea, alongside activation energy, and remembering both parts keeps your collision-theory explanations complete in SPM Chemistry. When a question asks why a collision did not cause a reaction, a full answer can point to either missing condition: too little energy, or the wrong orientation. Naming the correct one for the situation described is what earns the mark.
