Every SPM Chemistry student eventually asks the same question: if my time is limited, which chapters should I revise first? It is a fair question, but it deserves an honest answer rather than a made-up table of percentages. The official construct weightings can vary and should be checked against the current format, so instead of quoting numbers that may be wrong, this article shows you where marks genuinely tend to concentrate and, more usefully, how to work it out for yourself.
Why “most marks” is not the same as “most chapters”
Chemistry (code 4541) is examined across three papers: Paper 1 is an objective (multiple-choice) paper with 40 questions, a longer written 4541/2 worth 100 marks, and Paper 3 is a practical test assessing science process skills. Marks are not spread evenly by chapter. Some topics appear again and again, in Paper 1 objectives, in Paper 2 structured questions, and inside an essay, because they are the tools the rest of chemistry is built on. A single strong topic can therefore earn you marks in several places at once, which is exactly what “high-yield” means.
The genuinely high-yield areas
Across the syllabus, a handful of topics reliably do heavy lifting. These are the ones worth protecting first.
The mole concept and chemical calculations. This is the single most reusable topic in the whole subject. Once you can move confidently between mass, moles, volume of gas and concentration, you unlock calculation marks in acids and bases, electrochemistry, thermochemistry and rate of reaction, not just in its own chapter. Master the mole concept early and the whole paper gets easier.
Acids, bases and salts. This chapter is a favourite for structured questions because it blends definitions, titration calculations, salt preparation and qualitative analysis. It also feeds directly into Paper 3, where preparing a salt or carrying out a titration is a classic practical.
Redox and electrochemistry. Redox and equilibrium rewards students who can write half-equations, identify oxidising and reducing agents, and explain electrolysis. Oxidation is loss of electrons and reduction is gain, remember “OIL RIG”, and you can pick up marks in both objective and essay form.
Rate of reaction and thermochemistry. Both lend themselves to data questions and graphs, so they appear often in Paper 2 with tables to complete and curves to interpret. They are also heavy in the practical paper.
Carbon compounds. Organic chemistry brings reliable marks for naming compounds, drawing structures, and recalling reactions such as combustion, addition and esterification, memory-friendly marks if you drill them.
How to find the pattern yourself
You do not have to take anyone’s word for this, and you shouldn’t. The most trustworthy guide to where marks fall is the papers themselves. Work through several years of past papers with the SPM Chemistry papers hub open, and keep a simple tally: each time a topic appears, add a mark next to it. After five or six papers a clear pattern emerges, the same handful of topics keep returning, often carrying full structured questions or whole essays. That tally, built from real papers, is far more reliable than any percentage someone quotes you online.
Pay attention not just to which chapter appears, but how it is tested. A topic that shows up as a 10-mark essay rewards different preparation from one that appears as a single objective question.
Turning the map into a revision decision
Once you know the high-yield areas, use them to sequence, not to skip. The smart move is to make the reusable topics automatic first, because they pay off everywhere, then give proportionally more practice to chapters that carry full structured questions or essays. Lower-frequency topics still deserve a pass; SPM can and does ask about anything on the syllabus, and leaving a whole chapter blank is how a strong candidate loses an easy grade band.
A worked reminder of why calculations are so central: using the molar volume 24 dm3 mol−1 at room conditions, 1.2 dm³ of a gas is simply 1.2 ÷ 24 = 0.05 mol. That one skill reappears in gas collection, in reacting-mass problems and in electrolysis, proof that some topics really do earn their marks many times over. The honest bottom line
There is no secret list that lets you ignore half the syllabus safely. What there is: a set of high-yield, reusable topics that deserve your first and best hours, and a reliable way, past-paper tallying, to confirm the pattern for your own year. Spend your strongest revision on the mole concept, acids and salts, redox, and data-based topics, keep everything else at least warm, and you will be putting your hours where the marks actually are.
