Families often ask us how SPM Chemistry compares to IGCSE Chemistry, especially when a student moves between a national and an international school, or is weighing which route suits them. The two qualifications teach a great deal of the same core chemistry, atoms, bonding, moles, acids and bases, rates, electrochemistry and organic chemistry all appear in both, but they differ in structure, language, assessment style and who sets them. Here is an honest, non-hyped comparison. Where a specific figure varies by exam board or changes year to year, we say so rather than inventing a number; always confirm the current details against the official syllabus documents.

Who sets each qualification

SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) Chemistry is a national qualification set by the Malaysian Ministry of Education and examined by Lembaga Peperiksaan. It follows the KSSM curriculum, and KSSM Chemistry has been implemented for Form 4 since 2020. The subject carries the code 4541. IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) Chemistry is an international qualification offered by exam boards such as Cambridge and Edexcel, taught in international schools and private centres worldwide. Because IGCSE is offered by more than one board, its exact paper structure and grading depend on which board a school uses.

Curriculum structure

SPM Chemistry is organised across two years, Form 4 and Form 5, with the syllabus divided into chapters you can see in full on our syllabus overview. It is a fixed national curriculum: every SPM candidate sits the same content. IGCSE Chemistry is usually a two-year course as well, but different boards arrange topics differently, and some offer “Core” and “Extended” tiers that determine how far a student goes and the grades available to them. The underlying chemistry overlaps heavily; the sequencing and depth are where they diverge.

Exam format

This is the most visible difference. SPM Chemistry is assessed through three papers: Paper 1 is an objective (multiple-choice) paper with 40 questions questions, a written Paper 2 with structured and essay-style sections, and Paper 3 is a practical test assessing science process skills. IGCSE Chemistry typically uses multiple-choice and structured theory papers too, but the number of papers, their length and their weighting depend on the board and tier. A key practical difference is that many IGCSE boards offer either a hands-on practical exam or an “alternative to practical” written paper, in which candidates answer questions about experiments they may not physically perform. SPM keeps its practical assessment as Paper 3, a practical test of science process skills. So a student used to SPM’s practical paper should not assume the IGCSE practical works the same way, and vice versa.

Language of instruction

SPM Chemistry is examined in Bahasa Melayu, with an English version of the paper available, and many schools teach it bilingually. IGCSE Chemistry is examined in English. For a student whose stronger language is English, IGCSE removes one layer of difficulty; for a student comfortable in Bahasa Melayu, SPM does. This is not a small point, in a subject full of precise definitions and command words, answering in your stronger language genuinely affects marks.

Style of questioning

Both qualifications reward understanding over rote recall, and both use command words like state, explain, describe and compare that demand specific kinds of answers. In our experience, SPM Chemistry places heavy weight on precise, mark-scheme-shaped written answers, particularly in the essay sections of Paper 2, you have to phrase things the way the scheme expects. IGCSE questions can feel more varied in style between boards. Neither is objectively “harder”; they test overlapping skills in slightly different packaging.

Which suits a student?

The honest answer is that it usually depends on the school pathway, not the chemistry. A student in a Malaysian national school follows SPM; a student in an international school follows IGCSE. Where a family genuinely has a choice, consider:

  • Language strength. English-dominant students often find IGCSE’s medium easier; Bahasa Melayu-comfortable students may prefer SPM.
  • Onward pathway. Consider where the qualification leads, local matriculation and pre-university routes are built around SPM, while IGCSE feeds naturally into international A-Levels and foundations. Check the specific entry requirements of the destination you have in mind, as these vary and are set by each institution.
  • The core chemistry is transferable. A student switching between the two is not starting over. The mole concept, bonding, redox and organic chemistry carry across almost entirely; what changes is exam format, language and phrasing.
