Most science-stream students take Chemistry and Biology together, and at some point every one of them asks the same practical question: with limited hours, which deserves more of my attention? This is not the same as asking which is harder. It is a question about where your time produces the most return, and the honest answer depends on how each subject earns its marks, where your current grades sit, and what you plan to do after SPM. Here is how to think it through, from a Chemistry teacher who wants you to do well in both.
How each subject earns marks
Chemistry and Biology feel similar from the outside, both are science subjects with content to learn and experiments to understand, but they reward slightly different work.
- Biology is the more content-heavy of the two. Its marks come mainly from understanding processes and structures and describing them accurately: how the kidney filters blood, how photosynthesis works, how a nerve impulse travels. There is a lot to know, and the challenge is volume and precise description.
- Chemistry blends three things: memory (tests, colours, definitions), abstract reasoning (particles, bonding, energy), and calculation. A meaningful slice of Chemistry marks come from working, and from problems with a definite right answer, mole calculations, titrations, empirical formulae. That difference matters for where your effort pays off. In Biology, extra study almost always means learning and rehearsing more content. In Chemistry, extra study splits between learning content and drilling method, and the calculation marks in particular can be secured quickly once the technique is solid, because the same steps repeat across every question.
Where your effort produces the most return
Rather than favouring one subject by reputation, look at where your marks are actually leaking.
- If your Chemistry calculations are shaky, that is often the fastest place to gain marks in either subject. Calculation questions follow fixed methods; a week of focused practice on moles, concentration and titration can turn repeated losses into reliable points.
- If your Biology is a wall of half-remembered content, the return there comes from structured recall, but it takes longer, because there is simply more to hold in memory. Budget accordingly.
- If one subject is already strong, protect it with light maintenance and pour the freed-up time into the weaker one. The most common mistake is over-revising a favourite subject because it feels comfortable, while the weaker subject quietly drags the overall result down.
A quick diagnosis beats a gut feeling: look at a recent paper in each subject, and put your hours where the marks are currently being lost, not where the subject is most enjoyable.
Let your pathway guide the balance
Your plans after SPM should tilt the balance, though rarely to the point of neglecting either.
- Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy value both subjects, and Chemistry is almost always essential, its calculations and organic chemistry underpin later study. Chemistry’s organic section, which you can preview in carbon compounds, is genuinely foundational here.
- Engineering and the physical sciences lean on Chemistry and Physics far more than Biology.
- Biological and health sciences, agriculture, biotechnology obviously prize Biology, but usually still expect a solid Chemistry grade.
Because entry requirements vary by course and institution and change over time, check the specific requirements of the pathway you are aiming for rather than relying on general impressions. What is safe to say is that Chemistry keeps more doors open across science pathways than almost any other single subject, which is a fair reason not to let it slide even if Biology is your favourite.
A sensible way to split your time
For a student genuinely unsure how to divide their revision, this order works well:
- Fix the fastest losses first. Usually these are Chemistry calculation marks and Biology recall gaps you can close with active practice.
- Maintain the strong subject, grow the weak one. Give the stronger subject enough time to stay sharp, and the majority of the spare time to the weaker.
- Match the method to the subject. Biology rewards spaced recall of content; Chemistry rewards a mix of recall and repeated problem-solving, especially on the exam papers.
- Do not abandon either. In a science stream, a weak grade in one subject can undercut the pathway you want, so the goal is balance, not sacrifice.
