Chemistry in an ordinary Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan is taught in a full classroom, on a fixed syllabus timeline, to a mix of students who are miles apart in confidence. Your teacher has forty minutes, thirty-something students, and a scheme of work to keep. In that setting it is easy to become a passenger, present in body, drifting in mind, relying on tuition to “really” teach you later. That is a costly mistake. Come to class already knowing the word “mole”

The biggest reason SMK students switch off in Chemistry is that a lesson lands before they are ready for it. Take notes that record understanding, not dictation

Treat the school lab as rehearsal for Paper 3

Practical periods in an SMK are precious and often rushed, but they are your live rehearsal for the practical assessment and for the experiment-based questions in the written papers. Do not let a lab session pass as a social event where one groupmate does everything. Handle the apparatus yourself, watch the actual colour change, note the actual reading. When you later revise qualitative analysis or rate of reaction from notes, you will be recalling something you did, not something you read.
