How to write state symbols correctly

State symbols look like a small detail, but in SPM Chemistry they are marks you either collect or throw away on almost every equation you write. Leaving them out, or guessing them, is one of the most common ways students quietly lose marks in Paper 2. The good news is that state symbols follow clear rules. Once you know the four symbols and a short solubility guide, you can add them correctly and confidently every time.

The four state symbols

There are only four, and each has a precise meaning:

  • (s), solid. A substance in the solid state, including any precipitate formed in a reaction, such as silver chloride, AgCl(s).
  • (l), liquid. A pure substance in the liquid state. The one you must never forget is water, written H2O(l). Pure liquid bromine, Br2(l), is another.
  • (g), gas. Any gas, such as hydrogen, H2(g), carbon dioxide, CO2(g), or oxygen, O2(g).
  • (aq), aqueous. A substance dissolved in water to form a solution, such as hydrochloric acid, HCl(aq), or sodium chloride solution, NaCl(aq).

The trap most students fall into is confusing (l) and (aq). Water itself is (l) because it is a pure liquid. But sodium chloride solution is (aq), because the salt is dissolved in water, it is not a pure liquid. Get this distinction right and half the errors disappear.

The part that decides (aq) or (s): solubility

The hardest choice is whether a salt is dissolved, (aq), or sits as a solid precipitate, (s). This is decided by solubility rules you should memorise. In SPM Chemistry:

  • All nitrates are soluble, always (aq).
  • All sodium, potassium and ammonium salts are soluble, always (aq).
  • All chlorides are soluble, except lead(II) chloride and silver chloride, which are insoluble, (s).
  • All sulfates are soluble, except lead(II), barium and calcium sulfate, which are insoluble, (s).
  • All carbonates are insoluble, except those of sodium, potassium and ammonium.
  • All oxides and hydroxides are insoluble, except those of sodium and potassium (calcium hydroxide is only slightly soluble).

So in a reaction that produces silver chloride from two solutions, the silver chloride is the insoluble product and must be written AgCl(s), while the leftover sodium nitrate stays in solution as NaNO3(aq). Worked examples with the symbols in place

Seeing full equations makes the pattern obvious.

Metal with acid (a gas is given off): Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) → MgCl2(aq) + H2(g) The magnesium is a solid, the acid and the salt formed are in solution, and hydrogen escapes as a gas.

Carbonate with acid (three products, three different states): CaCO3(s) + 2HCl(aq) → CaCl2(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g) Note water as (l) and carbon dioxide as (g), a favourite place to drop a mark.

Precipitation (a solid forms from two solutions): AgNO3(aq) + NaCl(aq) → AgCl(s) + NaNO3(aq) Silver chloride is insoluble, so it is (s); the sodium nitrate is soluble, so it is (aq).

Neutralisation: NaOH(aq) + HCl(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) Both reactants are solutions; the salt stays dissolved and the water is a pure liquid, (l). You can check any reaction like these against our reactions reference.

State symbols in ionic equations

Ionic equations need symbols too, and here (aq) carries real meaning, it shows the ions are free-moving in solution. For example, the precipitation above reduces to: Ag+(aq) + Cl(aq) → AgCl(s) The ions are aqueous because they are dissolved; the product is a solid because it is insoluble. Writing the correct symbols here also shows the examiner you understand why a precipitate forms.

Common mistakes to check for

Before you move on from any equation, run this quick check:

  • Did you add symbols at all? A balanced equation with no state symbols often loses the state-symbol mark entirely.
  • Is water (l), not (aq)? Pure water is a liquid.
  • Is a dissolved salt (aq), not (l)? A solution is not a pure liquid.
  • Is an insoluble product (s)? Apply the solubility rules, do not guess.
  • Are all four symbols spelt and bracketed correctly, lowercase, right after the formula? Clean, exam-safe wordings and formulae are in our glossary.
